They had endless issues with the mod team at /r/minecraft causing controversies and attacking users to start with (someone building a monument to their deceased girlfriend, for example, was perosnally attacked by mods for "excessive self promotion" or something else equally stupid) and generally just doing a really shit job of it, none of which Mojang employees had any power over despite it directly impacting Minecraft's public image. so this is a convenient excuse for them to fully cut ties with that shithole. Great timing too, I'm sure major companies beginning to purge from Reddit looks great to investors...
Yeah, r/minecraft mods are rather shitty, so perhaps this whole issue was just the necessary push for Mojang to get away from it.
