the "communist ml" side on tumblr complaining abt the phrase "the usa has always been fascist" because it isnt accurate to a precise analysis of fascism and that it "whitewashes liberal democracy" has made me realize that site is truly full of navel gazers who have never interacted with anyone irl, much more so with nonwhites.

like when has a person who says that the usa has always been fascist (an effective rhetorical tool mind you!) ever been a proponent of fucking liberal democracy. like jfc. how pedantic.

whenever a leftist ik admits they used or use tumblr/4chan/reddit regularly or used to identify with it I keep my eyes on them like they're going to turn into a horse or something

especially "leftists" spaces or boards there because they didn't have a "everything I believe in is wrong I have to rebuild what I know" self critic moment, people who held obvious reactionary beliefs such transphobia or racism then decide one day to become a communist have to either wipe out everything they believe in or exist in nazbol communities, because the moment you start talking some "tradwives" and "all lives matter" bullshit you're getting banned anywhere remotely on the left. They still carry the nonsense they held back then you just won't notice it because it isn't obvious or isn't in the topic, you talk to them for a while and they seem fine then boom they start having nostalgia about the Hamilton Musical and Obama, or if they're a redditor they start talking about Muslims, or if they were a /tttt/ or /leftypol/ user they use abbreviations and slurs no one knows.

At the risk of getting put on horse-watch, I'm going to strongly agree with you about reddit-logo

or if they're a redditor they start talking about Muslims

I lurked on /r/atheism a long time ago while grappling with the fallout from my faith shattering, and what I concluded was that that crowd of "new atheists" were racist as hell. If I talked about not being muslim anymore because I wanted God to actually exercise power to make the world better, and since that doesn't happen I can't believe in anything supernatural anymore: Upvotes galore, sympathetic comments, people commiserating and trying to help me cope. If I said that bombing Muslims because you think their governments are too theocratic / autocratic is a horrible way to "liberate" anyone, and anyway people didn't need to be "liberated" by force, they just needed to be socially free to choose their beliefs and lifestyles (and, when free to choose, most people would remain Muslim because it's not actually bad to be religious, and you can be gay and trans and progressive and still be religious): Downvoted to hell and people dogpiling me and even citing the Quran out of context to tell me, someone raised in Islam, that I didn't know shit about it. If I pointed out that it's absolutely ridiculous for a mostly white mostly western userbase to talk so much shit about Islam at all when evangelical christianity is the thing that's actually threatening people's civil liberties: "terrorism", "migrants invading europe and making the crime rate skyrocket" (gee, why would a bunch of refugees suddenly show up? Did western foreign policy have anything to do with that?), and even worse things I don't want to retype out because it's so hateful.

The heel turn that Richard Dawkins took was not a surprise. That motherfucker ended up deciding he was a secular christian because he was so bothered by seeing Muslim women wearing clothes.

Redditors as a group seem to just hate Muslims because redditors are western chauvinists. That's the real reason they don't complain about isntrael committing a livestreamed holocaust on our western goverenments' dime. They like seeing people being murdered, as long as they're the right religion.

I remember in the early 2010s when Atheism+ was popping up and I immediately noped out because they were obviously racist.

The heel turn Richard Dawkins took was not a surprise.

He always made me uncomfortable with how he had a double standard regarding Islam vs. the other Abrahamic religions. Like Christianity argues slaves should just enjoy being slaves and was used to justify the institution in the US. Islam requires its practitioners dress modestly which is somehow worse than the daily torture and abuse suffered by millions of people who were abducted from their homes and forced to live in brutal conditions like cattle? Fuck off with that shit lmao

go on about how common the name muhammad is.

Unlike you, us westerners don't use religious names (except for Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Sarah, Rebecca, Abraham, Paul, Peter, Mary, Simon, Ruth, Joseph, Isaac, James, Martha, Jacob, Alex, Levi, Nathaniel, Raphael, Adam, Eve, Aaron, Ava, Caleb, Chloe, Daniel, Elizabeth, Ezekiel, Jason, David, Elon, Elijah, Toby, Ethan, Gabriel, Herman, Immanuel, Jesse, Jesus, Jonah, Josh, Tim, Julia, Leah, Lois, Malcolm, Phoebe, Phil, Tyler, Samuel, Seth, Tara, Jared, Thomas, and Zach). We use made-up rando shit like Nevaeh and Kethanaghan.

I've been an atheist since my early-mid teens and will continue to consider myself such, but God damn, I feel less and less like the label actually applies to me when I think about the kind of people who are often associated with the term.

a lot of these people, and in most communities dominated by westerners in general, is that they retain a lot of their chauvinism, especially the yanks. they would shout for the destruction of the settler state for israel while praising fucking new york city in the next post. the discontinuity between how they treat the two settler states is something i've repeated numerous times.

  • it's also why liberal zionism is more common than anti-semitism over here, you can't get away with saying some bullshit about jews taking over the world and anti-semites can't hide it, they'd get chased out of even the democrat circles, meanwhile a liberal zionist who gets radicalized into socialism will still hold zionist beliefs because it's not too obvious and they themselves think liberal zionism is leftist.

Leftypol is extremely reactionary. I'm also suspicious of anyone who uses it because they don't have rules like actual leftist spaces against bigotry and slurs.

I only browse 4chan for opposition research to understand and recognize dogwhistles. It's one of the reasons I no longer debate conservatives elsewhere because it's clear mainstream reactionaries have absorbed the Alt-Right into their platforms. This includes 4chan-style """trolling""" where they pretend like they were "just joking" if you call out their shitty beliefs.

The place was ground zero for online neo-nazis recruited by Steve Bannon outside of actual Stormfront.

they use abbreviations and slurs no one knows.

Exactly 💯%. They'll carry over their reactionary thinking and hope anyone won't notice.

whenever a leftist ik admits they used or use tumblr/4chan/reddit regularly

What you say is valid but it's also not like there's platforms you'd expect a person IRL to be on that are better than those?

  • using those websites to find something or because you're in a niche community that only exists there =! being a redditor or a tumblr/4chan regular, those sites have specific political culture. Other sites are either a wildcard or straight up reactionary, I never encountered a "I'm an instagram reels leftist" because they'd say the n-word 50 times before they'd turn a corner and I never encountered a "I'm a facebooker" because those don't exist that's not a real word. I guess we could add bluesky into the list in a few years once a substantial number of its users stop being libs.
