Yeah, I'm just dipping my toes into TNG and that interaction rubbed me the wrong way
I think they were trying for some of the animosity Bones and Spock had in the original series. Yeah, it did not come off well.
Yeah, she did feel like they were trying too hard to make her into McCoy... She was a lot better when they gave up and let her be her own character... And then just as she was coming into her own, she left.
It wasn’t animosity. Bones and some of the other crew just tried to bully Spock all the time. It was basically racism to go along with the sexism in their treatment of Janice Rand.
Animosity is literally a strong feeling of dislike or hatred and in this case the source of that animosity would be the racism.
There’s no evidence in the show that Bones actually hated Spock.
The show itself definitely tried to prove that emotions are superior to logic (by having Kirk beat Spock at chess) and this situation reversed itself during the run of TNG (likely in response to Deep Blue’s victory over Kasparov). There was a lot Chauvinism and smug superiority in TOS but nothing I would call strong dislike or hatred.
Could very well be! I've only a passing knowledge of ST, I've just started watching TNG a few weeks ago, and I've just started season 2 so I'll see how this dr is :)
I'm excited for you! There an entire TV Trope named because of Season 2 called Growing the Beard which is the opposite of Jumping the Shark. It's where a show really finds their stride. So if you made it through Season 1, you should be in for a good time!

I genuinely didn't like her for at least half that season just based on that interaction, though she does come around and get a lot better
