Because it's one of those useless obscure trivia things occupying valuable space in my memory banks. The Wachowskis could have done a better job establishing why Cypher was startled and this guy could focus on his anniversary.

Yeah, but then it would be something well known and not an indication of being interested in minutiae. Something that is often mocked in social situations.
