20 years? Let's be honest they do this at every opportunity they can and pretend they're just a poor innocent left liberal that was forced to join rightists because "the left are too annoying these days"
I mean, on an individual level absolutely. But there's a definite ebb and flow to the relevance of this framing within national politics. Last time it was big was the Tea Party bullshit about 15-20 years ago, and the time before that was the Clintonite Third Way and Ross Perot's Reform party about 15 years or so before that.
