Nobel: "dear rich folk, we need to do more kind shot for the peasants. I say, we should do a contest and he who does the goodest deed, gets a prize"
Rich: "But Nobel, what should this prize be?"
Nobel: "Well Gold and money, and also we get to flaunt it on the peasants so they can see how magnanimous we are"

what actually happened was that alfred nobel was completely devastated by the death and destruction his inventions wrought, and pledged that all of the money from them should go to people who help humanity.
