Oof; I actually had a hilarious opposite case of this; My uncle (very elderly) was sitting with me when I was much younger to help me deal with insurance after I got into a car accident; he tells me that you've got to be tough with these guys, you can't be nice, you have to be as hard as you can and to really make them squirm; we go in and he's the nicest, friendliest person I've ever met.
I had to pay for most of the damages to my car.
