MODERATORS
This place is obviously something of an echo-chamber, but it's so rich coming from a redditor for whom their entire lives are going to be capitalist echo-chambers whereas the people on hexbear just have their little lemmy thing and otherwise exist in the same sorts of dogmatically capitalist spaces the redditor does (for the most part).
This is the only place I know where leftists congregate, and their only things in common are antiimpetialist, and far left of center. Which has a lot of actual difference of opinion (anarchist, and communist is pretty deep theory with a ton of different factions) so is this place an actual echo chamber because if I admit that ideologically I'm an anarchist doesn't that mean I'm inviting a dog pile?
Yeah, Hexbear has taught me to purity test where it matters and let ideological shit slide. I'm a maoist, but have lots of anarchist friends I do organizing work with. Sometimes we disagree on things, but the important thing is that we're able to work together to make our area a better place. We all kind of accept that there's no chance of a revolution where we live, so there's really no point in getting into ideological spats. Even if there was a revolution coming, there'd still be more value in working together as leftists than purity testing each other.
I think we are fairly good about keeping sectarianism to a minimum.
I don't mean it as a point of judgement, it just is an echo chamber and you can observe that in the lack of voiced disagreement on countless issues much more specific and peripheral than "should poor people get to eat?"
Like what?
There's the question of whether Russia is imperialist. In about equal measure, I've seen people here both say that the Ukraine War is an inter-imperialist conflict and that it's actually anti-imperialist on Russia's part. The course of action (revolutionary defeatism) remains the same, but I've seen the occasional Hexbear on Hexbear argument over it.
But the consensus on the site if just that, a consensus. It wasn't just arbitrarily decided, there was a lot of discussion and "struggle sessions" over the idea. Which is the opposite of an echo chamber, the group discussing an idea and then coming to a consensus, even if some individuals in the group disagree with the consensus, they'll accept it, is exactly how a group should work.
The term "echo chamber" is used so much by libs that it loses any sort of potential meaning it could've had. Like "authoritarian" it just means "bad thing me no like."
If it's being argued over, that counts against the "echo chamber" idea though.
I missed the "lack of" part of the comment you originally responded to. Sorry.
Stop agreeing! What is this, an echo chamber?!
No worries comrade
I know bait when I see it, but there's one point that I've complained about a few times already (and in fairness to HB, was met with no reprisal on): https://hexbear.net/comment/6251976
As I explained to death in those comments, I support the DPRK over Occupied Korea and the West, I support its nuclear program and other military investments, and most of what an American would say about the DPRK is a lie, but the DPRK is not remotely Marxist, it can hardly be said to even be socialist (as they deny the need for private ownership to end), and I can go on with criticisms but you can get the idea. Basically everyone on Hexbear either redwashes the DPRK or stays silent, though some might tacitly believe what I said and just focus on the anti-imperialist struggle element, which is valid but does not detract from my claim.
It was an honest question, not bait, and I think you've brought up some perfectly valid points.
Sorry for jumping to conclusions. Thanks for being more charitable than I was
No worries
