Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try [email protected] or [email protected]
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

No live chat, there is Matrix for that. There is [email protected] if you want to chat with people via comments.

Ok I see, so what we are doing now is basically what Lemmy is about. Someone makes a post about a subject and people comment on the main post or reply to someone else’s comment on the main post. Is that about it or is there more to it?
That's about it. That is the core of digg and Reddit Lemmy is doing.
I found no value is live threads, Reddit live, or Reddit chat so I am happy this aren't here.
Got it, thank you for the answer
What is Matrix?
It's kinda like discord. But you can run it on your own hardware. Self hosted as we call it. https://matrix.org/
Ok, I’m not that technical but I’ll do some reading.
You don’t have to run it yourself, you can just create an account on an existing server of your choosing, just like Lemmy.
Aha! This is useful information I appreciate it
Critically, you can make your account on ANY one matrix server and then you will be able to talk on all of them.
I find it analogous to IRC - Many servers connected together with shared users and chat rooms.
I use the Element app on android, and https://app.element.io/ on PC
Gonna be that guy and mention an alternative - Schildi Chat available for web, desktop and Android. Its based on the Element apps but with some extras. For example if you use the 'Next' variant of the Android app, Spaces work as intended.
That reminds me that I was going to set up an "official" CasualConversations matrix chat, but then completely forgot.
