I am watching Gundamn I (the movie version, but I think there is a 1979 series).

I watched the recent movie that was for the new anime. And some of the series (maybe the 1979 one) on Hextube, I think.

Holy shit, the animation shows it's age but that's fine; it reminds me of the original Dragon Ball (the very first one, not Z or Super or Daima)... Although, I think that the original Dragon Ball looked better. Also, Amuro slaps Fraw Bow, dammit! I mean, okay, he's just a kid, but still. Though the awesome blonde lady slapped Kai (I think that was his name, anyway). I can tell that Char is a fan-favorite, but I know next to nothing about the series of Gundam, beyond Gundam Seed and G Gundam (both of which I saw as a child).

Even though the Zakus are the lesser mobile suits, I really like them. Zeon has some cool aesthetics. And Char is an even match for Amuro, the famous "machine hobbyist," despite using Zaku that can be destroyed in one hit (I think the first kill is Gene and then... Denim? i forgor their name). Crown also dies.

Also, lol, I like how Amuro has to resort to a manual constantly throughout the movie. It is genuinely endearing. And he's tired after the second battle in space during the movie. It's... relatable.

So there are two timelines to this series?

What else do I watch from this series?

(Also, good on Fraw for talking back to Amuro after the second altercation in space; in G Gundam on Toonami, the main female character that was also a love interest just got shouted out and told to shut up constantly by the main character).

Welcome to the fandom! The 1979 series wasn’t what the creator originally had in mind, until he went to see Star Wars and decided to tweak several things. While the TV series flopped, the compilation movies were a hit, and a franchise was born.

Ah, so the 1979 series is, I guess, a bit useless.

It’s longer and has some characters and events that got cut from the movies for time (like Challia Bull, a one-off who got a bigger role in the what-if GQuuuuuux timeline).

I am guessing that the 1979 series is either canon but not shown in the movies (that is, all the scenes that were not shown are "true") or it's possibly canon (in that they take ideas from the defunct 1979 series, same way George Lucas took ideas from the Expanded Universe / Legends novels, comics, video games, etc. for Star Wars: The Clone Wars CGI series).

Which one, I wonder?

I think the TV series is more canon. The Japanese don’t really have a concept of strict canon, it seems. So much other anime and manga in the Gundam universe takes place during UC 0079. 08th MS Team, War in the Pocket, Blue Destiny, Space to the End of a Flash, Cucuruz Doan’s Island, Thunderbolt, and how many video games?

Honestly? Just roll with it and enjoy it. Figure out canonicity later.
