And your interpretation is the charitable one. I don't think comments like that are being stupid; I think they're deliberately trying to minimize and excuse fascism by gaslighting us that it's how the US was before. Users doing that are trolls spreading disinformation and ought to be banned for it.
Based on his post history, I suspect he's just genuinely stupid. Of course it is impossible to know. I've met people with precisely this attitude. In fact I suspect my sister is one.
That said, you are right. There almost certainly are people gaslighting, manipulating, "hello fellow lefties"/false-flag posting, or at least posting in sufficiently bad faith that there is no meaningful difference.
