Which maps can you recommend / do you use?

I'm looking for a map that has english names all over the world. Moreover a more beautiful world map would be awesome.

Have you considered the Organic Maps app?

OSMand can be configured to do a lot of cool things and I use it a lot. But honestly if you don't need all the bells and whistles OrganicMaps is a lot smoother to use by comparison

It is, you're right. But osmand is great for hiking and I don't really want to add an app just for browsing the map when osmand could do it

Okay so you want to use the online maps instead?

If that is the question I use Microsoft Earth as an underlay with the offline map. The slider can change the transparency as needed. It looks like this

This setup relies on the offline map data which is a downside for you. But I think you can do something similar with an online map tile overlay and sat underlay and not show offline data

Edit: I played around and you can make that work with online maps too. I used Microsoft Earth as an underlay and Cycle OSM as the primary map. This is what it looks like and the settings
