I haven't had this issue, but I use a more minimalistic/compact UI, that makes all the images square preview-sized so all topics (and media) are the same size. Not a proper fix if you like the full images along with the topics but it's a workaround I guess.

E2: "show full height images" under the card layout too might be what you're looking for
