Borders don't need to exist. Borders should not exist. People should be free to come and go and work and play anywhere they want, anywhere on the planet. Far better to bloom where you're planted, in my humble opinion. Easy to think that when you come from a place that has a pretty high quality of living. I seriously doubt you'd have that opinion if you were from some place like Somalia or even Mexico. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [+] drop_and_run@sh.itjust.works -6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (3 children) [deleted] permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 2 years ago If only people had friends, meaningful occupations, local amenities they enjoyed. Second, if everyone is treated like a citizen no matter how they come to live in a place, then why wouldn't they pay taxes the same way I and most everyone else does; by having it automatically deducted from our pay before we even get the check? The only reason illegal immigrants don't contribute this way is because the system prevents it. The only reason illegal immigrants don't contribute this way is because the system prevents it. And the system only prevents it so that racists have an excuse as to why certain groups of people should be excluded from things without straight up saying it's because they don't want to see people that aren't carbon copies of themselves. permalink fedilink source parent [–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) What about the EU, where most countries have open borders? I dont see romanians all go to Belgium, Germany, France, where life is so much better. Last time i checked, Hungary still has a population and its even bigger than Norway This assumes everyone would do things in their own short time self interest and ignores a lot of factors permalink fedilink source parent

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 child) Historically, it was open borders - as long as you had the correct skin color. Ellis Island didn’t send anyone away - unless they had like TB or something. In the 50’s - many Mexican Americans who were legally citizens were deported in “Operation Wetback.” Based on skin color/appearance - which matches with the reports of what ICE is doing now harassing Native Americans. It’s never been about following rules, it’s always been about being the right kind of person permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [+] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 point 2 years ago* (last edited 8 months ago) [deleted] permalink fedilink source parent

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 1 point 2 years ago I dunno about that "most" man. The America I grew up believing in was the "give me your tired, your poor" America, and I bet a lot of us feel the same. Borders are stupid. permalink fedilink source parent
