Considering much of it's acquired by injecting a toxic chemical slurry into bedrock — at pressures great enough to fracture rock — and big fossils tell us not to worry because they promise it'll never leach into the water table ... lol ... gas does way more harm than the Co2.
Humanity will be dealing with polluted water supplies for thousands of years; if we make it that long.
