RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

Evening. It’s hot. But the only constant in life is change.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It's hot in the evening? Where are you from brother/sister?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Southern US and the AC only managed to catch up at night. It’s bearable though. We are all in good health. How about yourself?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Climate change amirite haha. I'm Nigerian, so heat is something I'm used to. Also in good health, and i guess that's the most important thing.

What do you do for a living?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Mainly I work with software, specifically security research. I do a lot of reverse engineering and embedded development too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How's that going for you? Do you enjoy it?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yes, I do. It’s very interesting work with hard problems.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It takes a level of intelligence to do what you do. I commend you. What do you do when you're not solving complex problems?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Well I do enjoy some gardening in my free time. I try to take a more relaxed approach when I’m off the clock, but I am known to explore technical reading materials related to my work.

Okay, what's the next step for you? What's the next risk you want to take, or phase/direction do you feel you want to take your life in?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I am satisfied. I plan to continue doing what I'm doing. I have no desire to progress further in my career, buy a house, move... no plan to take any actions.

Okay. I think i might be able to make a guess now. From all that you've said you're: 48

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Really good, highly educated guess! I can see why you'd pick that age.

I'm 35. While most of my peers are looking to advance or had their kids recently, my wife and I have no desire to have children and my career has reached an advanced stage just this year following a job change, hence no specific plans at the moment as this is pretty much where I want to be.

You know what. I initially was thinking mid 30s before i asked you that final question. You were initially giving off vibes of someone who has been working a security research job for quite a few years. Coupled with the fact that you need a decent level of expertise and experience to work in security research - at least from the quick googling i did - i assumed you had at least a master's degree.

With the average master's degree finishing age being around 28 and a few years of experience, i was going to guess mid 30s, but that last question threw me off. Seems like you're living a pretty fulfilled life at such a young age though, so that's good.

It might be some time I spent growing up living near a Buddhist temple that could’ve affected my current focus on being content that may come to others later in life.

I do have a masters, but I was able to get into the field early by switching between education and working. It took me much longer but it played out nicely.

That was fun. I hope you can use this to fine-tune your future age guessing skills.

Happy things are going well for you man. This has definitely improved my age-guessing skills haha. Take care bud
