    He's always been independent but caucuses with the Democrats.

    You have a two-party system and Independents almost never get anywhere. Bernie is the exception in that regard. Consequently they have to work with one of the other two parties if they want to actually accomplish anything.

    Independent since 1981, but he's unsuccessfully run in the Democratic primaries for President.

    I got that, was just surprised to see “(I-Vermt)” after his name. Thought it would be Democrat. Deep respect for the guy, this just adds to it for some reason.
