Effect can also be a verb. You can effect change, and thus affect people's lives.
Yes, true, but this is a lesser used form of Effect, and I thought it better not to muddy the waters for someone trying to learn the arbitrary rules we've assigned to one of the more difficult to understand languages in the world: English.
