I’ve been searching. Best I can guess is he was funded by sympathetic socialist governments. Google sucks . He was a doctor though, so I guess he treated people for food and lodging.

Now I have to read the Motorcycle Diaries.

They gave me *Quora, and I'm not going to dismiss them out of hand; Bing gave nothing remotely useful. Right now, I need sleep. Just hope my brain will cooperate. This may not be a short term research project.
