When senior civil servant Olly Robbins was dismissed from the Foreign Office last week over Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador, some senior civil servants said it was unfair. But on Novara Live, James Schneider argues that - far from being "brilliant" and "saintly" - civil servants are “deeply enmeshed in power structures that work against us”. Robbins himself is no innocent. He personally oversaw the destruction of information leaked to the Guardian by Edward Snowden in 2013 – and did a three-year stint at Goldman Sachs in between appointments to public office.

Zarah Sultana was suspended from parliament on Monday for calling Keir Starmer a “barefaced liar”. The prime minister said last week that he had no idea former US ambassador Peter Mandelson had failed vetting processes over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. On Novara Live, Sultana says parliament is “completely and utterly out of touch”. “You saw it on Monday when calling someone a liar was grounds to be suspended for five days – not that the prime minister knowingly appointed the close friend of a paedophile.”

“Most of the people I know are quite disappointed with the direction of the Labour party.” Rivkah Brown visits the Ridley Road occupation in Dalston, where traders are resisting a landlord’s plans to redevelop the site of a 100-year-old street market and evict stallholders. One trader says it feels like the landlord and the Labour council are “more working to get us out than working with us.” Another says that the Ridley Road campaign has seen more support from the Greens than any other party. This is an excerpt from our full report on Hackney and Lewisham. Watch "Will The Green Party Destroy London's Labour Mafia?" on our YouTube channel now.

Palantir “should be treated as a hostile foreign actor” and expelled from the NHS before it’s too late. On Novara Live, Harriet Williamson explains that in February next year, MPs will have an opportunity to trigger a break clause in a major contract with the “dangerous” US spytech firm. If they don’t, the consequences for Britain’s healthcare system, and broader society, could be severe. In the US, the company has used healthcare data to help ICE with its brutal and draconian crackdown on immigrants, something that could be repeated in the UK. “That’s really, really scary,” Williamson says.

Some of Palantir’s activities, like organising frozen nugget supply chains, are banal. Others are not. On Novara Live, Steven Methven says that CTO Shyam Sanka speaks about killing people through military operations as if it’s just another process to make more efficient. “I find that a deeply extraordinary and corrupt way of speaking about two vastly different kinds of activity. And it is what they produce: extraordinarily efficient mass murder.”

“Since 2023, the European Union […] has facilitated the open and undisguised genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.” Speaking at a conference in Ireland, author Sally Rooney rejected the idea that the EU has “failed to act” since October 2023. “The EU has been taking decisive action," she said, "ensuring a ready supply of weapons and cash to the aggressors". Workers in Europe should take on their political leaders through industrial action, she continued. "We must refuse and constantly search for new ways of refusing to be complicit in what we know is wrong."
