Just realized that the other day.

I had initially intended to feel it out and honor the blackout from 12-14, then figured, "I'm here now, might as well ride out the month if Reddit isn't responding in any meaningful way to the community's requests" and now I think I'll just be in the fedi apps for the foreseeable future.

It's different here, but it hasn't been a struggle and it gets better and better with time. Feels nice to not support inhumane and user-hostile endless corporate greed.

As I recall, Reddit really dragged their heels in implementing GDPR-mandated data checkouts, citing technical challenges and privacy issues, but I'm sure it was more about the technical challenges and laziness (old codebase that has kind of sucked since forever and they're not keen on touching it). This was when the law went into effect in 2018.

I requested archives of my data from Reddit as per GDPR a few weeks ago, and it's still pending. And the page said "oh, uh, we'll provide them within 30 days." ...which is well within the letter of the law, if not the spirit. Other sites I've requested my data from can provide it within days, usually.

All I can say as someone who's been perplexed about Reddit's tech side for a long time is that it's pretty damn emblematic of the whole site.

I should no longer be amazed by anything, yet here we are. Either the delete feature was sloppily implemented, or someone implemented the most aggressive, proactive undelete feature in history.

Any easy way to find a list of Lemmy communities that match reddits your subscribed to. There were a lot of tools when moving from Twitter to mastodon and I was wondering if someone made something similar for Lemmy.

This video shows that Reddit refused to delete all comments and posts of its users when they close their account via a CCPA / GDPR request.

This is absolutely insane, and shows that companies OWN you.

I see a lot of comments from bootlickers on how the protests are dumb and stupid and dont work and engagement metrics are still holding but the quality of posts and comments has noticeably depreciated imo. So much so that whenever I visit the site Im actually shocked at how bad it is.

Hello All,

I'm trying to assist in migrating a few subs over to Kbin/Lemmy, I'm still confused on the difference between Kbin and Lemmy.

Regardless, have been looking into tools to migrate content from the subs, and came across this one https://github.com/rileynull/RedditLemmyImporter

However, the readme assumes readers have knowledge they don't have, so it's for example not clear to me if it's possible to "import" the database created by this tool to an existing lemmy instance or if I would need to create an entirely new instance just to host the content (and then what? can instances be "merged"?)

Thanks for your time in advance.

This article is an x-post from m/quickstart

Quick note before starting: although this article is far from comprehensive, I wanted to get something done in time for the next wave of reddit migrants when the third party apps close down.

What you see below was written in anticipation for the same set of questions from new users being asked again and again.

If you want me to add anything in, or make any corrections, comment here and I will do my best to make amendments before I repost it on 1st July. Thanks!

All screenshots were taken using the kbin Web version on chrome for android, unless otherwise specified.

How to use this guide

This article is a work in progress, but what I am hoping to achieve is an easy to follow, quick to consume guide that presents you with the knowledge you need in a somewhat logical order.

To that end, I have divided it up into sections, or 'tiers'. The idea being that once you are confident at one tier, you can move up to the next. So let's start with...

1. Lurker Tier

Intro to subscriptions and magazines (kbin communities)

Other basic navigation

Voting and boosting content

Optional quality of life settings

Exploring the Fediverse

Useful information

2. Contributor Tier

Basic terminology

Don't worry if all these terms don't click with you right away. You might even be able to disregard a few of them. Either way, you can always come back and refer to this later.

  • A 'magazine' is a kbin community

  • Magazines contain 'threads' and a 'microblog'

  • The terms thread and microblog can cause some confusion, so we'll clear that up soon. But first...

  • A thread is a discussion based on either an 'article' (i.e. text post), a link, a photo, or a video (although video is not yet supported)
    How to create an article

  • A 'comment' is a response to a thread

  • A 'microblog' is a collection of 'posts' that are based on the magazine itself as opposed to a single article, link, photo, or video

  • Confusingly, a post can still contain things like images, it's just that its replies will appear alongside all the other microblog posts
How to upload an image to display on a post

  • Responses to microblog posts are called 'replies'

  • The distinction between comments and replies is significant because they are split by type in your user profile by those names.

  • A 'favourite' is a thread you have upvoted using the arrow button
    How to view your favourites

Threads vs microblog posts

Thread Post
Shown on front page ✅️YES ❌️NO
Added to favourites ✅️YES ❌️NO
Can be downvoted ✅️YES ❌️NO
Has a title ✅️YES ❌️NO
Can be pinned to top ✅️YES ❌️NO
Can be boosted ✅️YES ✅️YES
Shown on microblog ❌️NO ✅️YES
Can comment ✅️YES ❌️NO
Can reply ❌️NO ✅️YES

Staying engaged

3. Addict Tier

To make good use of the tips in this tier you must have the prerequisite knowledge from tiers 1 and 2.

Tips in this tier may also be quite quirky (e.g. only works on desktop) or require detailed explanations. Or they might be advanced niche tips for users looking to get the absolute most out of kbin.

Although you've reached the end, this article is still a work in progress. If you've any corrections, or feel something is missing, you can reach out to @Friend or post to m/quickstart. Thanks for reading!

Are search engines able to index Lemmy?

I still keep seeing all search engines link to Reddit, but nothing from Lemmy is linked in organic search results.

I'm expecting big push towards Lemmy to happen when Google returns Lemmy links.

Is there a way to sign into multiple Fediverse instances using the same account? Or is it possible to merge account across instances?

I found that measure SNS tools like #Twitter or #Reddit are over-comfortable mainly because of optimized push-type timeline and I don't need to input query of what I really want to know about.
It weakens my habit of thinking and I keep reading the timeline even when my health declines.
#Fediverse tools are more difficult and I'm tired to use them, so I can take a break and get back to thinking.

Seems like a win win. Reddit is fine with it and becomes a site promoting that Taiwan is a country and spreading awareness of Tiananmen Square massacre 1989. While subs return to normal.

Or reveals themselves to be the mouth piece of the CCP if they force removal of Taiwan is a country and Tiananmen Square massacre 1989.

Edit: #taiwanisacountry should be enough. That mere statement has been enough for western capitalists to quake in fear.

(Please keep in mind this is something I've written in regards to all of these various social platforms, not just kbin, mastodon, lemmy, etc)

Albeit, other platforms have failed their user base for various reasons. This article isn't about that. This is about addressing other issues that encourage low effort or otherwise useless content. The vast landscape of social media platforms, there is a growing need to reevaluate and refine the user experience (UX) to address common issues that hinder genuine interaction and content discovery. By examining the shortcomings of existing practices and proposing innovative changes, we can create a more engaging and meaningful online environment.

Hiding Voting Metrics:
Voting metrics inadvertently lead to conformity and discourage users from expressing genuine opinions. Users should feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and perspectives without fear of judgment or backlash.

Removing Emoji-Based Reactions:
The current practice of using emoji reactions as a means of interaction lacks depth and context. These reactions do not provide any insight into why a user liked, disliked, or loved a post... This change would promote more genuine interaction and create a space for nuanced conversations.

Discouraging Clout Chasing Behaviors:
Platforms can implement measures that limit the emphasis on popularity metrics. Introduce alternative ways to measure influence and impact (insightful comments, fostering discussions, valuable contributions). By shifting the focus from superficial metrics to meaningful engagement, platforms can create an environment that encourages authentic participation.

Promoting Content Quality and Relevance:
Hiding voting metrics and mitigating clout chasing behaviors allows platforms to prioritize quality and relevance. Engagement, interactions, relevance, and authenticity is used to determine the visibility of content. This approach ensures that valuable and meaningful content receives recognition, while reducing the emphasis on arbitrary popularity metrics.

Recognizing the Limitations of Memes:
While memes can be entertaining and lighthearted, they often lack the depth. Memes, while humorous, rarely foster in-depth discussions or promote the exchange of diverse perspectives. By highlighting the limitations of relying on meme-based content, platforms can encourage users to move beyond superficial engagement and embrace more substantive interactions.

This approach optimizes content organization by utilizing horizontal space before continuing vertically. This method ensures that users can browse through a larger number of posts allowing users to quickly scan and explore popular posts while maintaining a clear overview of the content available. Reorganizing the UX of platforms by adopting a mass display approach for content organization brings numerous benefits. It optimizes content visibility, promotes content diversity, and streamlines content organization. By presenting the most interacted-with content side-by-side (instead of most popular on top) and utilizing horizontal space effectively, platforms create a dynamic and engaging user experience.

This reimagined platform design enhances content discoverability, improves user engagement, and fosters a thriving online community that values quality and relevance.

There are tons of other aspects of this to discuss but I won't bother diving into them (how new and unpopular posts receive recognition, front page content dying off due to less interaction based on time decay, etc etc)

My account is only 2 years old so I have been overwriting and deleting the comments manually to try to avoid issues people have seen with the options that use the API. However, all my comments are non-existent in my profile after 7 months? If I click into a thread I can see them but they are wiped from my profile. Any way to delete these?

This is an article by Cat Valente during the Twitter Migration, discussing the cycle of enschittification and the history of social media.

We found it very perceptive and helpful when leaving Twitter, and I think people leaving Reddit may feel the same.

Hey Fediverse,

We've been working on something cool and wanted to share it with you. It's a new project called Lemmy.link, and it's all about making RSS feeds more accessible and useful on Lemmy.

We've noticed there's been a lot of talk in various communities about people shifting back to traditional RSS aggregators like Feedly, TT-RSS, and Newsblur. It got us thinking: why not bring those RSS feeds directly to Lemmy instead?

That's how Lemmy.link came to life. Right now, we have 10 communities collecting from over 30 RSS feeds, covering topics from World News and Technology to Business, plus some popular YouTube communities like News, Technology, and Explainers.

But we're just getting started, and this is where you come in. We'd love your ideas for new communities or RSS feeds to include. There's just one thing - to keep things running smoothly, we're focusing on shared interests and staying away from personal communities with custom feeds.

Also, please note, for now, lemmy.link is closed for signups. You'll need to subscribe from your current Lemmy/Kbin instance. Once we've incorporated the upcoming 0.18.1 captcha update, we'll take a fresh look at this.

So, take a tour of Lemmy.link and let us know what you think. We believe there's huge potential for this project in the Fediverse and your input is a big part of that. Please provide any feedback on [email protected]

Thanks for reading, and we hope you enjoy what we've built so far with Lemmy.link.

Like many others, I've been wondering "Hmm, where the heck do I get all the cute animal pictures now?"
...but the answer to that question was staring me right in the face.
I'd just do what I've always done if I want cute animal pictures.
I mean, Pinterest is right there.
Reject subredditery, embrace tradition.
