I've been thinking of the same concept for years! A world where the various factions are based around themes in metal music. And finally someone came up with the same idea and did the awesome worldbuilding! And art by the creator of killsixbilliondemons.com no less!

I am only a tiny-bit dissapointed that the world seems focused on extreme metal and doesn't quite seem to fit other metal styles. But I won't let that stop me. I totally plan to create heretic bands around Power Metal, Industrial Metal, Metacore and so on!

You can use it make your own custom leaders and units when playing the game. You can also read my blogpost about it.

There are both PDF (easy to use) and LibreOffice (if you want to make some edits) formats

It's one page per army, and one page for all of the necros. There should be enough units to make any army possible.

Bases are 25 mm (1 in) wide (double that for tyrants)

Let me know if I made any mistake or if you like them :)

I'm strongly considering printing them out and putting them over cardstock (and then either using plastic stands or just hot gluing them to metal washers), though if I do I probably want to make necromancers using @[email protected] 's designs

I've started training a LoRa based on the magnagothica art. This is my first time doing this sort of thing and I'm working with what I have in the PDF only.

Put together a template for putting together your own faction. Includes proper spacing, as well as my notes on how each faction was designed in-game. Contains a standard .docx as well as .odt, as I use LibreOffice and that's the filetype for it. WILL require the Magnagothica typeface used throughout the book, Metal Blackletter (https://befonts.com/metal-blackletter-font.html)

MAGNAGOTHICA: MALEGHAST

Update 1 11/4/2023

Thanks for playing about 50 games of Maleghast immediately after it released! This game has had an insane reception. Here's a quick list of all the things that have been tweaked in this update. In general we just fixed some text issues and typos, and made some small balance adjustments based on play experience after release.

  • Tom

GENERAL

  • Clarification on MOVEing and ACTing that they can be in any order, and can't interrupt each other.
  • Renamed armor types for clarity. Armor is now physical armor. Ward is now magical armor.
  • Reword on vitality and vulnerability to account for armor
  • Clarification on minimum range
  • Clarification on tokens (not optional, spending for AoE, etc)
  • Clarification on big units and terrain types, as well as terrain stacking
  • Added terms to glossary (armor types, etc).

CARCASS

  • Slight reword on Gunwight's scavenge ammo
  • Added slight token clear to Operator ability BULLET TIME

Goregrinders

  • Carnifex's Rile has a chance to grant two berserk
  • Carnifex's Wild Slashes now deals fire damage
  • Warlord's Ignite now ignores armor
  • Warlord's frenzy chain effect chance increased to 3+/5+
  • Warlord's Overclock grants 2 speed
  • Warlord's killing spree ignores armor

Gargamox

  • Scum's attack now always applies plague
  • Scum's pseudopod now range 2-3
  • Slime's vile rupture now deals toxic damage
  • Leech gains magic armor
  • Leech has new Deathwash trait. It was previously the only unit in the game without a trait and I felt bad for it.
  • Plaguelord's virulence effect chance increased to 3+/5+
  • Plaguelord's Ceaseless spew gained a 6+ 2 plague effect chance
  • Plaguelord's Mox populi now creates 4 scum units

Deadsouls

  • Chosen can no longer move through walls
  • Chosen's Foul monuments grants range 3 to tombraiser instead of granting additional wall creation
  • Chosen's Kidnap is now a curse
  • Vizigheist's Soul Frost no longer has a chance to leave a wall
  • Banshee's Bale Scream is line 4
  • Banshee's Freeze Soul no longer has a chance to leave a wall
  • Bound Devil's Beckon Lamb gains mininum range of 2
  • Bound Devil's Limb from Limb now increases damage instead of applying it multiple times.
  • Dark Priest's Doomblade is now range 2 instead of 1-2
  • Dark Priest's Unholy Summoning is now a curse
  • Dark Priest's Frozen Hell no longer creates walls, has range 2, and deals damage to units standing in adverse terrain in range instead
  • Dark Priests' Bloody Flail is now range 2-2
  • Dark Priests' Lathean devil whip is now range 2-3
  • Dark Priests' Twist Sinews is now a curse

Abhorrers

  • Penitent's Mea Culpa now only removes 1 or two tokens with its first two effects
  • Zealot DF to 3+
  • Zealot whirling chain changed to range 2 instead of 1-2
  • Inquistor DF to 3+
  • Inquisitor's winch increases maximum range as intended
  • Holy Body's MV reduced to 3
  • Holy Body trait appended to note it lacks Miracle
  • Holy Body's miraculous flesh now only grants 4 vitality
  • Holy Body's Bolides can no longer create hazards under characters
  • Holy Body's Indignation now ignores line of sight
  • Holy Body's Ablutions had redundant stance text removed
  • Exorcist's Corpse Violent stance now grants choice of armor
  • Exorcist's Decree of Forbiddence is now a curse

Igorri

  • Chirurgeon's DF to 3+
  • Chirurgeon's Accelerate Evolution now triggers at turn end
  • Strigoi's Sin Eater down to 1 damage
  • Strigoi's Regurgitate now mutates automatically, rapid adaption increases this

Put together a Necromancer unit for each of the 6 houses. I made Igorri and Gargamox first and then went back and redid them as I learned the style. Please enjoy!

Roll20 stretches the units out to fit into its squares, so i quickly changed the resolutions to be at least a bit more square to reduce distortion. I did this super quick so its not the most refined, but it seems to work well enough for me.

How are people handling 2x2 tokens? Like, if half the token is on an elevated space but the other is on the floor, does it gain the benefit of attacking downwards? do enemies gain the penalty?

Also, only a few thrall units actually have the Thrall trait. do the thralls without it still get 2 units each?

Is the extra damage generated from the Gargamox Necromancer's Virulence lethal? I'd think it isn't since that'd be way too strong, but curious on other people's inputs.

Every token for use in game, plus some extra symbols for things that aren't tracked with tokens- like Abhorrers ramp-up actions, Bloodrage, being Unloaded, Curseproof, or possessing Miracle. Includes an image to use as a corpse.

I'm not the most extreme metalhead around, but I know some stuff. So I decided to expand on the suggested Playlist for each great house to help put people in the mood. Each of these playlists include the 3 original songs and then more songs which I felt fit their theme musically and conceptually.

C.A.R.C.A.S.S.

The original music was all about the speed of the music. Since it allowed for the clean vocals and electronics of BABYMETAL, I took that as allowance to add more clean vocal tracks and futuristic sounds, a lot of which match the theme of the faction. For example Good L_ck (Yo_'re F_cked) from Celldweller is like a perfect theme song for a faction like this.

Goregrinders

Goregrinders were all about that brutal death metal, so I continued the trend with songs tying into the theme conceptually like Doom Slayer by Alex Terrible. And of course this list would never be complete without Face Fisted from Dethklok

Gargamox

I'm not quite sure what theme to go for with Gargamox. Their three songs all seem to be chosen conceptually rather than with a concrete music style. So I tried to stay with songs which invoke the dirty punk aesthetic, and if possible still at extreme metal. I'd probably try to make a pure punk list around them at some point.

Deadsouls

Deadsouls immediately brought me to the bombastic black metal of Cradle of Filth and of course Immortal, but since I am not too much into that scene, I expanded the selection with also some more deeper vocals so long as it matched the theme.

Abhorrers

From the start I had a good idea that the Abhorrers would be all about that Melodeath. While the initial collection was fairly fast paced, I couldn't stop myself throwing a lot of Rotting Christ in there due to how well their concepts fit, and continued from there.

Igorri

I had some trouble decoding what kind of music Igorri would go for. In the end I settled for some technical/prog stuff due to their mad scientist nature, and threw also some songs which just match their theme as a house very well even if technically not as "extreme" as the original 3, like Narcosynthesis from Nevermore and Prime Specimen by Black Comedy.
