#Yarnuary prompt: who taught you how to #FiberCraft ?

My mom taught me when I was 6 or 7 or so. I remember not understanding how to turn a round, so my mom had to flip my coaster for me. 😂 Then I dropped it for years.

I didn't really start knitting seriously until college. That was before I was diagnosed with #ADHD, so all I knew was I concentrated better in class when I had my hands busy working on hats. Been knitting ever since!

Last night I cast on Wanderwillows. I bought the yarn 10 years ago 🫣😱. Confession is good for the soul. 🤣

Wanted to post more socks this month but between illness, lemm.ee breaking (hai this is @[email protected] alt account), my hard drive breaking, and general holiday nonsense I have failed to do so.

So here's a collage of a load of them instead!

The ones in the top left were my first ever ones, I'd got overconfident and committed to making his n' hers pairs so when I hated the first lot there were still two more socks to go. It put me off trying socks again for SO LONG 😂

I don’t know anyone irl who might be vaguely interested so I thought I’d post here! I’m making this hat for my MIL when I see her in a few weeks. It’s a free pattern and you can find it here.

I've been trying to get my 3d printed circular knitting machine going for almost 6 months now and I think I'm almost there. I finally realized that it's impossible to crank the heel/toe on this machine - but only because the extra drag of decreases causes it to bind up. It'd totally be possible if the gaps on the spindle were larger so it was less difficult to pull slips/decreases down into it.

Anywho, I gave up on doing everything on the CKM and just cranked a tube (worsted weight - 36 needles) with the intention to do an afterthought everything. I did the heel today. Not great, not terrible, it'll work. I'll try to throw on the toe tomorrow. I definitely should've made it wider so I had a more gradual decrease and a larger heel. But hey - try, fail, learn, do better : )

The title makes a bold claim, I admit. But go with me here.

This is the Tea Rose Slip On by Retro Claude, knitted in Stylecraft Special XL which is super chunky 100% acrylic yarn. Definitely not what you think of when you think knitted jumper!

I only tried this as an experiment because I happened to have the yarn lying around after buying it for an abandoned wedding-related idea at the start of the year. Figured I had nothing to lose!

It was an EXTREMELY quick knit, the yarn is incredibly soft and lovely, and the colour. Be still my heart 😍

The pattern is free and the designer is honest about only having tested the size S. As a result, the neckline in my size L turned out to be waaaaay too wide even for someone who loves a good wide neckline. So I just grabbed a crochet hook and slip stitched around and problem solved! Albeit in a slightly sloppy way.

So yes, conclusion, super bulky jumpers CAN work and not be frumpy and awful to wear. One day I'll post a photo of me actually wearing it to prove that last part but, as Aragorn would say, it is not this day.

My mom had this yarn in her stash for goodness knows how long, she mentioned she initially got it because she wanted to knit a tee with it. I got her a pattern from Ravelry to fit her preferred style (flat knitting) but she had some trouble with the lace pattern (abbreviations like k2tog and ssk are new to her, at least in name lol). I told her no worries mom, I'll knit it for you!

This is actually the second piece, I only have to knit the top lace pattern and it'll be ready for blocking and sewing together, and just at the beginning of summer, yay (southern hemisphere here).

Pattern: Angel Tee by Rina Leyton (available in English and Spanish) Yarn: Unknown viscose yarn, sport weight

Thesesocks are knit from the heel out, grafted together to make a tube, and then the toe and cuff are picked up and knit. No one believed me when they saw my project when I told them it was a sock. I felt the urge to sacrifice a chicken before grafting because I wasn't sure it was going to work.

I would say Go Hawks! But it is not that kind of a season this season... 🫣😭

Two of my best friends both gave birth within an month and I try to be SCRUPULOUSLY FAIR in providing them with knitwear. But duplicates are boring! So I’m knitting their Christmas jumpers two at a time.

My 7yo daughter I want to finger knit. Ok, I go downstairs to the craft room for the yarn I bought her. No, I need thick yarn. I think about that... probably right. We go downstairs and pick out some bulky yarn. Sit down to start and my 7yo son says he wants to finger knit too. I give him a choice of colors and go downstairs for more bulky yarn. Set up daughter's slip knot so she can start and ask son for the yarn I want to play like it's a magic rope. Turn back to daughter who is struggling. I quickly refresh my memory on how to finger knit and try to help. She says, I don't want to finger knit, I want to knit with needles. I collect the yarn and go back downstairs for her needles and yarn. I quickly refresh my memory on how to knit left handed (she's a lefty) and pull her into my lap to start knitting together. We do three stitches with the limerick I don't want to knit.

And that... Is why I'm rocking back and forth in the corner (jk).

My first pair of socks, weee! I had way more fun doing this than anticipated when I first read the written instructions but it was very easy once I watched the matching video tutorial (I had to do 1/2 of the stitches mentioned in the video since I was doing fingering held double).

I can now totally see why people like knitting socks so much and I can already tell this is the beginning of a new obsession 😂

These are the two skeins of my TAAT-sleeves. Both were fresh skeins, only used for the sleeves. But one of them has twice as much yarn left than the other. I'm not amused.

On a side note, if I run out of yarn this sweater will be in serious risk of getting thrown in the fire....

The brown sock is my first ever. What is wrong with the picture? Yes, the sock is inside out. I could not figure out how to kitchener the toe, so I just cobbled it together. The lightbulb moment came when I was knitting my second pair of socks. No wonder the kitchener stitch didn't work! [Edit: the photo is in the comments. Second edit: and below. Facepalm.]

The pink socks are my WIP - I have progressed to knitting two at a time, magic loop, and am very pleased with myself.

Ok so I finally took the plunge and I'm knitting my first pair of socks. Ever. I'm doing fingering held double because less stitches 😂

I'm following the vanilla socks on magic loop video tutorial by Crazy Sock Lady and it's helped sooo much. I suck at understanding written instructions (probably because english is not my first lanuage) so seeing it done has made things much easier.

I can now totally understand why socks are such a big thing lol.

Behold the socks that created my obsession! These were actually the third pair I knitted but the first ones that made me understand why knitted socks are so great.

The pattern is the classic Hermione's Everyday Socks, and the yarn is a special blend of all kinds of things including silk and bamboo, bought as a souvenir from a shop called Yarnia in Portland during a big US road trip we took in 2015. You can sort of see the different strands in it in this pic here.

These are my lucky socks. I wore them to job interviews, I wore them the day I got accepted into uni, and I wore them for confidence whenever I was doing something scary.

Alas, after years of heavy use, one of them has a hole in the ball of the foot and I expect the other one won't be far behind.

So given that for once I've managed not to overburden myself with Christmas crafting this year, I think my project for the holidays is going to be to learn how to fix these. At least they'll be usable for wearing around the house, and given they're 8 years old that's pretty good going really!

As well as the theme switchover I am also very late on opting us in to the Lemmy Tagginator as discussed, mainly because I made that thread while half-conscious with covid and forgot all about it. Seriously. So ill. I am currently a complete shambles.
