I have a concern with some of my fancy goldfish that seek the surface after being fed. They sit there gulping air in and I am concerned that they may get swim bladder issues from it.

Why do they do this? I have plenty aeration (2 Airstones and a lot of surface agitation). Also it is only 4 of them that do it. The rest just swim as regularly.

The tank is slightly overcrowded. They are in a 140 gal while I reorganize their 190 gal. but nothing extreme. Also they did the same when they were in the large tank so I don't expect it to be down to overstocking.

It doesn't look like a particularly high-quality aquarium set, but all the necessary parts seem to be there. Even before getting this thing, I've thought about keeping dwarf frogs. Would a 5-gal. tank be big enough for two or three of them? If not, what would you suggest? I've kept aquariums before, but it's been a very long time and I know myself well enough to know that I need something relatively low-maintenance.

This is a pretty niche issue so I'm looking for advice from people who preferably have experience with fancy goldfish. They are usually highly inbred and do often not adhere to regular fishkeeping practices

I have more and more fish that seem to get issues with mostly positive buoyancy (one with negative buoyancy).

I only feed with sinking pellets and always presoaked. I have tried raising the temperature, starving them for 3 days and feeding descale boiled peas.

I have also tried adding salt. Nothing has any long lasting effect.

I am now considering using yellow powder (funox) as I suspect bacteria to be the cause of it.

Out of 18 fish only a few swim with the belly up periodically. Many og the rest seem to be struggling with boyancy nonetheless.

Parameters seem ok. Ammonia and nitrite are always 0. Nitrate is maximum 20. I do weekly water changes of 50%-70% The water is pretty hard and PH is high but I think keeping it like this is better than trying to lower it and maybe exposing them to fluctuating parameters.

The only other issue I can suspect is that I use tapwater and not old water. There is not chlorine in our tap water so I feel it is safe.

What are your thoughts about my situation? Is my considered next step, of treating for bacteria valid? What would you do? I do not have access to aquatic vets and no access to microscope.

Was it super challenging? Surprisingly easy? What was your tank like?

My free plecostomus I got a year or so ago. He wasn't specifically free... we just bought a tiny 15L fish tank to put some shrimp in, and when we filled it with water he appeared 😳

I'm guessing he was suckered on to the piece of driftwood and had enough moisture to survive the 48 hours or so between the seller emptying the tank, and us refilling it after buying.

Dudes fair bristly. A heck of a lot bigger now than he was when he appeared in the tank, not all that much bigger than the neo shrimp that were his tank mates.

I need it to be pretty small, and quiet since the tank is in my small apartment.

They came as eggs with plants I bought months ago. I honestly don't have a problem with them but over the week their population EXPLODED. They are everywhere and covering almost the entire floor. I understand I may need to get rid of them but they are still are live beings and I dont want to be inhuman. How do I get rid of them?

Cleaned up a fish shop 60L tank and did my first aquascape with river rocks, wood and plants.

I just did a 50% water change just to see if it seems to slow things down and potentially bring the pH back to normal. The clerk said most people have had bad luck with RRFs except one customer. Now I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna join the ranks of those who have killed them. Small tank, 4.2 gal/ ~16L

My local aquatic centre (Bert and Ernies in Stockport) was shutting down, only found out when I went in, I only wanted some plants as I want to get into planted tanks. Turns out they were selling everything and only had tanks left, I got there just after someone had bought the lot. But I was able to get this 60L for £5.

I have 3 Amano shrimp and an infinite amount of blue neocaridina shrimp but this shrimp looks different than both of them. Does anyone know what is is?

More Pictures Here

Earlier this year I decided to re-home and give away my main setup (180L) and focus on this little shrimp tank. It was previously used as a quarantine tank (approx 20L) but now is home to about 30 to 40 cherry shrimp (up from 15ish when I started).

First of all I want to thank you guys for helping me identify my eel. I haven't felt this kind of help in a small community anywhere else.

Now for the tetra's we had a dissappearing issue when we had a rainbow shark. We ended up getting rid of the shark and getting tetras till we had 20. Now we're down to 12. I currently have 3 swordtails, 2 loaches, a small brisslemouth pleco and a larger pleco that survived. Plus 2 eels, one that was answered here and another is a zigzag eel.

Am I having a problem with hiding spots? I know I don't have enough plants. I'm thinking of getting more moss and covering the area under the wood structure on the right.

Or are they getting sucked up the filter? I thought this but couldn't find any evidence in the filter system. Any advice would be fully appreciated.

Here's the pleco I'm questioning.

It looks kind of like a ropefish/reedfish but it's not as long.

Because redecorating a 10g fish tank with fake plants is cheaper than redecorating my apartment. It ended up more open on top than I wanted but my betta boi still has his floating log to hide in. Gonna go blow all my money on more aquarium decor to alter it during next week's water change.

Chill video about DIY'ing a tank

He climbs to the top of the glass, spreads himself out, and floats around upside-down on the surface. A tetra bumped him, and he curled up and sank to the bottom, so he definitely wasn't stuck up there. The second he hit the substrate he went right back to the glass and did it again.

Why? Whats his deal? We have a handful of assassins and none of the other ones are doing this. He only does it when the light is on.

Pic from above.

Not the best picture possible, but i believe i have total 2 male Red Gold's and one female, with the female being pictured here. I purchased a separation net, just in case and shes doing fine.

Signs that show this may be true

  • Other fish were following her around, poking at her
  • Red bottom area, getting darker
  • More of a "boxy" stomach area

Hey all! I wanted to share my first tank with you all. Today is 5 days in so still really new. Plants seem to be acclimating well (especially the tiger lotus)

This is a 7g cube I got off amazon. I chose to do the Walstad Method with this and have miracle gro organic choice capped with sand and gravel as the substrate. I havent done any water changes since setting it up.

The water got pretty cloudy over the first 3 days and has since cleared up quite a bit. You can see in the pics from bottom to top the progression: https://imgur.com/a/W7VBk4J

I tested the water for the first time after 24 hours and then once more yesterday. First test was ~6.8 pH with 0 NH3, 0 NO2, and 0 NO3. Yesterday’s test showed the same pH and Nitrate / Nitrite levels but had about 0.5ppm for ammonia. I will start testing daily today to observe how these levels fluctuate.

The only thing I am unhappy with this tank is my moss placement. I submurged the tank fully before placing the moss anywhere and then panicked and hamfisted the placement by supergluing a clump to my driftwood.

I think when I do a water change I will drain low enough to trim the moss and stick it on properly so it isn’t just a clump there.

Overall I am really excited to be doing this. Let me know if you have any tips / suggestions / insights. All guidance and feedback is appreciated :)
