No decisions have been made and will not unilaterally make one. I am assuming discussion in good faith. If you are not vegan do not add your comments or vote.

Hello,

When we defederated lemmy.world I was not familiar with how to administrate or moderate a lemmy server. Since the defederation this instance has changed a lot. We now have an appointed leader in @[email protected] to serve as a level head and counterbalance to any unilateral decision making, we have more users, more community with our weekly threads and we have a better sense of an identity for Vegan Theory Club.

The original reason that I blocked lemmy.world is because I do not want to retransmit American fascist propaganda on a server that I host, this will not change. Any communities there that are in violation with our ethos will be blocked from the admin side to prevent caching, so this problem is solved for me. Additionally, we were being heavily downvoted on every thread so when people posted the votes started at -2 making the experience miserable in my opinion. We have since disabled downvotes and will not ever be re-enabling them.

While I do not agree with the politics of the admins and general community there, I also recognize that it is by far the largest lemmy instance with the most users regardless of their political leanings. There are likely many vegans and leftists who use the site who are unaware of other alternatives in the fediverse and I do want to reach them. Ideally to create an account on this instance and join our community here. Also the way defederation works is it creates a situation where we can't see or respond to the activity on threads that we post due to the split. They can still see our posts when they are on other instances communities but we can't see the users replies. Experience wise I think this is poor.

My same hesitations as sh.itjust.works (who revoked their "endorsement" of this instance that I never asked for lol) apply here, they host drama communities with the intent to harass users (tankiejerk), though honestly what really put me off from sh.itjust.works was a thread in NoCredibleDefense where people were supporting the use of chemical weapons against conscripts which is a hard pass from me and I can't believe people support this cruel and inhuman tactic for any reason. To be honest what I have seen from lemmy.world is less extreme in nature so I thought I would gauge the community and what they thought here.

Even though the last thread of this kind went poorly, I am hoping this time no one immediately posts it to a meta community and starts using alts to manipulate the thread. If I detect any of this behavior I will lock this thread immediately.

Please note: My thoughts and my opinions are my own and not representative of a community of friends.

What is the Vegan Theory Club? (vegantheoryclub.org)
submitted 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

What is the Vegan Theory Club?

We're a loose confederation of actual friends who are vegan and want a place online for us to post and enjoy. We are all leftists of various types from Marxist-Leninists to Anarchists. There is no required philosophy to join and contribute, only rules against promoting hierarchy on this instance.

We're vegans. This means we are the voice for the voiceless. Our common trait is a respect for life and animals and a desire to end the injustice of human oppression of them. This is what unites us above all else even above human politics.

What is the Vegan Theory Club not? It is not a website to fill all of your needs or replace anything else. This is not Reddit, nor is this a Reddit replacement. It is not Twitter, it is not Facebook, it is not even discord of which this server acts as a recruitment tool for. This is a platform for us to share with each other and our small community. I chose the Lemmy software because it is easy to use, run and manage and I saw the federation as a positive making it easier to participate. We may re-evaluate this in the future.

What else isn't the Vegan Theory Club? It isn't a place for drama, tension, meta posting, screaming about tankies, US politics, promoting wars, or really any form arguments. This is why we don't host any vegan circlejerk type communities, this is why I am on guard about federating instances that allow this kind of content. It is overwhelming. The way lemmy works, the bigger fish in the pond eat the others. If you have a desire to discuss these topics you may use the federated communities to post this on other instances, it does not belong here.

Big picture is that this isn't a general purpose instance, this is a small community for friends. If you want to be friends, great, sign ups are open and for now we are keeping federation enabled. If you want to post on drama communities, fight about US politics, and act immaturely; Please simply block this instance and move on with your life.

I've been spending time on the instance and notice it ~~is~~ contains some extreme right wing American fascist propaganda, what is the communities' thoughts on this?

I thought it was general purpose and like sessionjams but the weird NonCredibleDefense (whatever the fuck that is), racist "white people" twitter and "meanwhileongrad" appears to be a drama community is sus as hell. What do?

Edit: I haven't made a decision and will not unilaterally make one. I am assuming discussion in good faith. If you are not vegan do not add your comments or vote.

Literally no one here is supporting Russia, the Russian government or the invasion of Ukraine. No one mentioned Russia but you, "Well" and this is fully out of scope for this instance and discussion. Russia is a right-wing fascist state that is the moral equivalent of the United States and China. I was assuming discussion in good faith but lemmy users can't help but to target each other and drive harassment campaigns through their harassment communities like tankiejerk, meanwhileongrad, fediverselore and similar. Look, I don't agree with a lot of the content they highlight, but I am not interested in silencing them or drawing attention to manipulate their votes or communities and want the same for vegans which are routinely silenced. These meta communities only serve to silence opposing viewpoints. Please note that this vegan instance doesn't host any "vegan circlejerk" style content or allow pictures of carnists to drive teasing or harassment of them either.

We are anti-war here and I stand with the working people of the world no matter what country they are in. Both the people of Russia and the people of Ukraine are victims of their governments who are using them as pawns to enrich themselves. War is a profit generation scheme by capitalists to punish working people and extract profit through their lives. Remember, the wealthy business owners and war mongers in Russia, Ukraine and the US have far more in common with each other than any of us or the people who die in their wars. Supporting military defense contractors and governments is part of this consent manufacturing that sh.itjust.works allows. Do I think the admins of sh.itjust.works are bad people? No, but I do believe they are allowing American consent manufacturers to run rampant on their instance and I wanted some feedback.

I'm going to close this thread now and believe it or not I am not in favor of defederation after this conversation. I am disheartened and deeply saddened on how it went though. Due to interference, I do not believe that I can meaningfully gauge this community.

The actor_name_max_length^[https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/blob/8d269fc08ee0efb03c20f97b4c1075881046490d/crates/api_common/src/site.rs#L260] in the site settings has been set to 30. This can be verified by checking here: https://vegantheoryclub.org/api/v3/site

Basically this means that people can now set display names of up to 30 characters long. Before it was set to 20, which meant that things like adding pronouns to the display name would often hit the character limit and would prevent you from editing your name.

This also applies to Site, and Community,^[https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/blob/main/crates/db_schema/src/source/activity.rs#L86] but that's probably not too important to mention, as community names have been fine with the limit.

Special thanks to @[email protected] for changing these values and following my poorly explained tutorial on how to edit the site settings.

Also TIL, powershell aliases curl despite it existing as a command in Windows already.^[https://stackoverflow.com/a/66840040]

I'm not sure if there is anything bad that can happen by increasing it too much so it has gone from 21 to 30 characters

This notice is to serve as our very official and very important endorsement for president. As we all know endorsements are the most important part of the election season so we as VTC come together to endorse, Bozo the Clown for President of Clown Country!

Bozo is no ordinary clown. He’s a legend. For decades, Bozo has embodied everything Clown Country stands for: laughter, silliness, and a commitment to spreading joy. He’s the leader we deserve—the one with the experience to balance the unicycles and juggle the responsibilities that come with leading our colorful nation.

Bozo knows what will make Clown Country great again— He’s got the big shoes to fill, literally and figuratively. And let’s face it—no one wears the red nose with more pride. Whether he's riding in the tiniest car with the biggest crew or leading us in the national squirting flower competition, Bozo has always represented the very best of Clown Country.

So, honk your horns, throw on your rainbow wigs, and get ready to laugh like never before. Let’s put a true clown in charge of Clown Country. Ladies and Gentlemen, Bozo for President!

This is social media for real people. Hosting reddit tier drama communities and user targeting is toxic to social media and will not be tolerated.

Lemmy is bullshit and the people awful. At least Reddit is free, I was donating to the Lemmy developers and paying to host my own social media. I have cancelled both.

A little bit about myself: I am a real person with issues. I was lucky to be able to figure out enough masking skills to hold down a job and have a family but yeah, I'm not normal.

I'm not interested in paying to be harassed by people like "ptz" who are pretending to take a high ground or instances that host communities designed to torment people like lemmy.ca, I'm not interested in random people downvoting my posts on my server for my friends. I'm not interested in people constantly repeating US politics and propaganda. Lemmy fucking sucks, I tried my best to make it better but to be honest, I don't think it is me, it is you.

I appointed a friend as admin for the time being. If she likes it I will consider paying for the hosting.

Good bye, thanks for not fishing.

Hello Vegans!

Everyone welcome @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] who have all graciously volunteered to help mod the [email protected] community. Thanks for helping out!

I resolved an issue with my web application filter blocking many Fediverse bots and services and figured out that I should have a blank allow list to allow everyone. I'm not aware of any pending issues and this resolves my issue getting listed in fediseer and fedidb.

Lastly I reenabled downvotes. If it sucks I will turn it off again.

Welcome to Vegan Theory Club (vegantheoryclub.org)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club!

This is a link sharing site for vegan things. We have open registration if you want to create an account and log in.

We host four communities which are like "subreddits"

  1. Vegan Home Cooks
  2. Vegan Recipes
  3. Gardening
  4. Vegan

The communities are here to help share links and photos for vegans by vegans.

Vegan Home Cooks is a site for a discord server called Vegan Home Cooks Discord. This is a low-friction post-what-you-cooked community so we can share what we made today and talk about it, no recipes required. We want to provide motivation and encouragement for each other and show off what we made today.

Vegan Recipes is focused on how to cook and links to recipe sites.

Gardening is focused on our gardens, plants, hydroponics and learning how to do it. Some of us are pros and some are just learning and want to post what we're reading and what we're doing.

Vegan is for general vegan news, I don't really know what to do with this one.

Our communities are federated with various other servers running software called Lemmy. If you have an account on one of those servers you can still subscribe to our communities from your home server and participate. If you create an account with us you can also view other federated communities across multiple Lemmy servers we are linked up with.

Thanks for visiting our site!

We abide by the Anarchist Code of Conduct

I don't believe they add anything to the experience and are actually toxic. If you have a strong opinion on why they should be allowed let me know, I can't think of any.

Hi Vegans,

I fixed the DMARC record so that the sign up emails should no longer go to your spam filters and quarantines. If you still have issues let me know

Thanks!
