Thanks for your work uncovering this. Imposing this broad and undisclosed censorship upon the user is unacceptable, so we have stopped hosting Tesseract on our instance.

    As I understand it, LS would fall under the 'microenterprise' classification in the DSA and therefore be exempt from the age assurance measures contained therein, so I think we can remain in the EU for the time being.

    Yes to all three. Regression of the political climate in the US makes me uneasy about operating services from there (even if it has been via an EU-based company up to this point). EU law also provides strong privacy protections against US overreach via apparatus such as the CLOUD Act and FISA 702, which can potentially allow US federal agencies to compel cloud service providers there to hand over any and all data they request - without any disclosure to us or you. We have been able to secure a more favourable deal on a root server in Germany, so there is some economic motivation.

    We're operating out of Australia. Hosting our data in Europe will provide additional privacy protections to users given that US-based companies can be compelled to provide hosted data to government agencies via a number of mass surveillance measures (CLOUD Act, FISA 702, etc.) without any disclosure.

    That said, Lemmy is inherently an open platform and users should operate on the assumption that their activity is public.

    The intention is to relocate all hosting services from east coast USA/Canada to Germany in early January. This should have minimal impact on most users, but I wanted to provide advance notice so everyone has the opportunity to delete their account prior to the move should they disagree with having their data stored in Germany, for whatever reason. If you wish to move instances, there is an account export option on your settings page.

    Server Upgrade and Update to Lemmy 0.19.10 (leminal.space)
     

    Hello everyone. I hope you're having/about to have an enjoyable weekend!

    A quick update to let you all know the server had a significant upgrade yesterday. While you may notice things are a little more zippy, the need for added performance was definitely not the main driver for the upgrade. The main reason was the ever-increasing size of the database, which had left us dangerously close to a full disk!

    Unfortunately, this means our monthly server costs have almost doubled, and while I haven't been open to accepting donations in the past, we have now passed a cost threshold where I feel it is appropriate. To this end, I have added a couple of donation options to the sidebar. Donate, don't donate, it's entirely up to you. I appreciate everyone's circumstances are different, and nothing is expected from you.

    In other news, we also updated to the latest Lemmy 0.19.10 version yesterday. 🎉

    While this is a fairly minor update, with most development now focused on the next major version, it does introduce the ability to delete PMs along with other content when a user is banned, which is a major QoL improvement for admins. Importantly, it means no more manually deleting Nicole's flirtatious PMs from the database...

    The server has been updated to Lemmy 0.19.6 🎉

    It looks like there may have been some small style changes to the web UI, so please let me know if anything has broken with the Leminal Space theme (if you're using it).

    EDIT: Minor bugfix release 0.19.7 has since been installed.
