I guess most people are kind of ashamed to admit that they've been duped by racist talking points and Russian disinformation campaigns.
United Kingdom
General community for news/discussion in the UK.
Less serious posts should go in [email protected] or [email protected]
More serious politics should go in [email protected].
Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
I'd love for us to rejoin but realistically it's not going to happen for a long time. It took god knows how long for us to leave in the first place, going back (even if there was appetite for it) would take a long time. Particularly because of the damage it's caused us in terms of relationships with EU countries, can see some leaders making us wait even longer just because (which would be fair tbh). I think it will require a culture shift and we're not in the right place to do that at the moment.
There is a big, big difference between "noticing" and "admitting". E.g. there are a lot of older drivers. They usually noticed that they are no longer good for the road, but would they admit it and stop driving? Or look at this senile American Mitch McConnell - probably had a stroke in the middle of an interview, but would he admit that he is no longer fit for office?
Gotta be honest, I was as pro-remain as they came, but even I've grown tired of talking about it.
I'm still fucking furious, personally.
I've become politically fatigued in general.
I'm dreading the next election cycle. It got so bad that I ultimately decided to get off of twitter last year. Too much politics can be a bad thing, especially for one's mental health.
I agree. I hate that I'm not as informed as I used to be, but switching off from the news and current affairs really has made me happier. Ignorance truly is bliss.
About a million britons moved to europe in 2020 alone. That's an insane brain-drain and capital leaving the country. At the same time immigration to the UK and working as a non UK citizen has been made harder. The long-term effects will be felt 5-10 years from now and millenials + zoomers will be the ones paying for the boomer's choices. I don't know any official numbers since 2020 but the majority of people leaving the UK settled in Germany or Spain.
Any conversations around rejoin are shot down as being treacherous to the UK. We don't have good media in the UK so there is no real conversation about matters that the Tories do not want to push.
its called being an adult and living with decisions you make. just dont ask us to adult twice as everyone will wet the bed
I don't think many people will have the enthusiasm to go through a whole rejoin thing whether they were leave or remain that feels like ancient history now. Bring up Brexit now and most people roll their eyes, myself included
I imagine what will work is that the government starts to rebuild relationships with EU countries and make the best they can of a bad situation. It's obviously not worked but to save face there'll be a lot of unofficial understandings and deals.
It's a mess
Because the people who actually benefit from Brexit control the media.
I mean it's not that complicated, while people may recognise it was a mistake to vote to Leave there's no way in hell they'll ever admit publically it was a mistake and support the movement to rejoin the EU.
Maybe if the Tory party remains gutted as a non-threat for a couple of elections, we can test the waters with the idea. However, the moment any party even suggests it, the Tories will throw up a party of Brexit stuff and knock them out of any election.
Because Tories have no backbone or balls for that matter. A shit party run by cowards, serial liars and frauds.
