There actually are the same number of incidents per capita as in other European nations, it's just more likely to die in a collision in Poland because screen doors are less effective at stopping the train.

  • how many of these are suicides?

That and likely a lot more level crossings without any barriers. They're common in Europe and people just ignore the sign that says "death box incoming" cause they do it all the time and nothing ever happens, so why stop this time. Also if you're in traffic and you leave the crossing free (as you should, people will honk you to hell and back)

That doesn't actually seem to be true. Just like with Brightline deaths in FL, most of these people are deliberately placing themselves in the path of a moving train because

spoilerthey do not want to be alive anymore.

PKP PLK has an extensive campaign "Safe Crossing", most cases do not seem to be that you are talking about but plain ignorance, impatience and sometimes stupidity. How do I know that? Every crossing in Poland has CCTV, yes every single one.

Check out their youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMaaBn2U0pR3dHeAzy9h-cg

Oh and also the police asked PKP PLK to stop sending them reports because they're getting too many. I'm not making this up, but for the love of me can't find the reporting.

Big oof. In North America at least, virtually all train/railroad deaths are actually suicides. It's over 95% of the reported deaths related to Brightline "H"SR. Like, a lot of the reporting bodies are politically motivated to suppress the suicide rate in their reports.

Typically, mentally well people without plans to do something do not check a train schedule beforehand. They also don't park their car in the middle of a level crossing or stand in the middle of the tracks and stare down an approaching train for 2-3 minutes.

Really interesting to see different behavior in Europe. I guess trains are a lot more normal and people are more likely to consider how it will impact people riding the train.

  • SpoilerI'm expecting that to account for a lot, if not most, of the total deaths, but in those cases people usually aren't in their car when they're on the tracks. That's usually a case of "i feel invincible in my car and do not understand that trains need for fucking ever to break."

They get flummoxed at the crossings because they think the flashing light bulbs need to be changed
