Hi, I'm a lemmy.ml admin. The one mod of this community has been inactive for years so i'm filling in here.

I just removed a bunch of posts linking to brand-new (ranging from days-to-months-old) Debian derivatives.

Expanding on what I wrote in a PM to the person who posted these:

i am quite certain that most of these distros are not things which should be recommended to anyone. the barrier to entry with LLMs has gotten so low, anyone can make a garbage distro which they'll soon abandon, and worse anyone can also make malware with a shiny website and write posts on a bunch of blogs to entice people to try it.

getting even a few users to try it could be quite lucrative: when someone boots a malicious iso it can pillage their disk.

so, I propose that, going forward people should not post links to new Debian derivatives here if they are not providing at least either a personal or 3rd-party endorsement of the credibility of the project.

if anyone (with a substantial good-judgment-indicating posting or commenting history) wants to be made a mod of this community, let me know.

That sounds okay. TBH I was expecting this community to discuss Debian itself, not the many many Debian based distros in existence, so I'd be okay with going a bit further and having it be Debian-only. That's what most people post about here anyway.

Those earlier posts you mentioned seemed like low effort spam (IMO), like I'm not sure who here would want to discuss Lindows of all things.

I wouldn't mind moderating, but I'm a dirty Kubuntu user not a Debian user directly lol. Although I have used Debian on servers a long time ago.

As @brickfrog@lemmy.dbzer0.com said I could see this community not including any derivatives. We already have communities for most of the big derivatives anyways. I would say we could also allow posts that are talking about apt or something even if the source is in reference to Kubuntu. IDK how we would handle posts about desktop environments, kernel patches, or exploits.

Thanks! It would be nice if some user(s) of debian itself would do it also but this is a start :)

Given how much worse Ubuntu has gotten in recent years maybe you'll find yourself switching to Debian soon enough anyway 😉

imo posts about lesser-known debian derivatives should be allowed here... but as i said earlier either the poster or a 3rd party source they're linking to should make a good case for why it is actually interesting and/or credible.
