I recently hurt my foot and any time I get up my shepherd will start trying to guide me back to bed so she can lay down and keep an eye on me

Are border collies pre-programmed with the herding skills or do they still have to be trained? 🤔 They're the one breed used for a task I'm not actually sure if they need training for or if they just do that without being shown/asked/told. Every other dog used for stuff (even stuff they were bred for) still needs some training and direction to do the tasks. Collies seem like they might just work right out of the box.
I've been making this joke for a while. When you have one or two kids, you can pay them individual attention. When it gets to 3 or more, you are just herding them, it's no longer "Johnny and Timmy" but "Kids, come on, let's go".
That's why big families get dogs, to help herd the herd.
I grew up in an old farm house on a gravel road and we had a Rottweiler. If any of us kids would start wandering towards the road, our rottie would effectively herd us by redirecting us in a different direction. It was an inate skill she just acquired without any sort of guidance. Dogs rule.
My childhood corgi would do this with me and my nephew if we were playing too far apart. My current heeler doesn't herd people or animals, but he does harass. He doesn't want you to move anything he just wants you to be annoyed and aware of his presence
I’ve heard so many stories about this happening. Wish people I knew had herding dogs so I could see it in action.
Found this, mostly because I didn't think it was real, but now I know.
