Do you want to store things long term or short term?

Windows was eating a lot of ram on my laptop even on idle, so if was planning to upgrade my ram from 16 to 32 gb, then I checked the prices and made the tactical decision to install Linux instead

It's also quite nice that Linux/etc let you choose what kinds of things you want it to do in low memory situations. I.e. I was getting some OOM process kills mostly because of a modded minecraft server running, and increasing the zswap max pool percentage to 50, changing the zswap compressor to I think zstd, and enlargening my physical swap partition eliminated them.

yeah I wanted to get more space but I ultimately chose to just upgrade from 16 to 32 GB ram finally. I have a decent amount of storage already, I'm just a blooming data hoarder so I've had to fanagle files around

I got a 1 TB SN850X for $90 a couple years ago for my game and page file drive. Also Patriot 2x8 5600 for like $80 in 2023. Very disappointing what has happened since then.

I'm a hoarder who never uninstalls Steam games even if I don't foresee playing them again. I bought an 8TB nvme drive last summer for $545. I questioned my life choices when I bought it, but now the same drive is $1750. I feel better about my purchase.

    I built my PC in 2024. Okay specs - 7950X3D, 2x 48GB DDR5-6400, 4090, 1+4TB Samsung 990, all watercooled. About £4k total.

Today I could sell that PC for about 10-12k. RAM was originally £300, now it's £1800 IF you can buy it. The storage also cost me around £400, today, easily £1500.

That's not really a contest because i can't afford either of those at their current prices.

I wouldn't push either button in 2026 or 2027 if you can wait.

The correct answer is "have bought them both 2 years ago".

I feel bad for anyone building now. I built my gaming setup + NAS and server PC and upgraded my Steam Deck in the past 2 to 3 years. Going to get as much milage out of these as I can till things settle down. I've changed all my Docker services to lower resource alternatives to keep things running on my existing ram.

Then in 5 years when things have only gotten worse and this is the new norm then I'll cry alongside everyone else. Or maybe China will get their fabs up and running and swoop in to undercut these bastards to save us all.

Buy decent memory, and a cheaper SSD. Since the MoBo is backwards compatible you should be able to get a PCI-E 4.0 SSD that won’t cost as much as a 5.0, and when (if) prices finally come down you can upgrade to a better one. Since a DDR4 MoBo isn’t compatible with DDR5 RAM, you’re stuck with DDR4 until you upgrade the MoBo again.
