I saw a vine a long while back that I would really love to find again that is relevant to the topic.

"You like this? You actually like this? I hate this, you son of a bitch!"

"You hate this? But I love this! You bastard!"

There's also the thread of dumping on a person for liking something because it is popular. "Boo! Basic opinion! You should like the weird niche stuff that I like because I fit into that extremely narrow niche!"

And I applaud the weird shit that isn't for everyone, I think that's where some of the stuff I love the most comes from, but sometimes there's a very good reason that something is already widely beloved.

    Comparing two different things.

    • liking something barely anyone likes -> no one is invested enough to care.
    • disliking something everyone loves -> everyone is invested

Someone (irl) said that Metallica - St. Anger is a great album the other day and it caused a bit of a ruckus in the group (mostly "oh, that's a new sentence")

    No exceptions.

Also, all of her songs except Trouble are boring AF and the goat (and sheep) cover of that one is the superior version.

There's a lot of (hopefully joking) hate on the pineapple pizza crowd. If you liked certain Star Wars movies you're likely to have all your Star Wars opinions disregarded by other fans. I think people like to make fun of the out group regardless.

This is the hive mentality that drives social media. It’s the only way it can succeeed. That, and the uquenching need for validation of course.

Reddit/Lemmy are definitely worse in this regard than something like Instagram

Well yeah, but from my personal experience Instagram is like a 60-40 split racist and Lemmy/reddit is like a 90-10 split liberal.

The Reddit formula just encourages a hive mentality More so then other platforms due to carma discouraging opposing opinions.

Disliking things everyone else loves is easy.

If you want to make people mad, be indifferent towards the things people love. That gets them every time.

Personally I think Steve Irwin was a dick who invaded animals living spaces and aggravated for television exposure then was predictably killed for doing the same thing. Dude got what he deserved.

Exactly. The sainthood he has received absolutely boggles my mind. And thinking that he was behaving like an asshole to wild animals wasn't even that uncommon back in the day, it is how he is depicted in a South Park episode.

I think most people who adore him have only seen still photos of him, and not actually watched any of the episodes of his show. Or they just have as little clue about wild animals as he had.

Game of Thrones (the book and series) was way over rated. 4.5/10 wouldn't stop half way through again.

I don't like when people just say they like or dislike something... I like when they can explain why they like or dislike something. If they can't do that, I assume their like/dislike is just group pressure from the beginning.
