Recommend some Canadian books. I just picked up an author that I enjoyed and I'm pleasantly surprised to discover they are Canadian.

Guy Gavriel Kay is my favourite author in the world, he writes a particular style of realistic historical fantasy. His prose reads a lot like Tolkien, and he's from Winnipeg.

Tigana is one of his more famous books, but my favourite is probably Lions of Al-Rassan.

Anything by Peter Watts. More sci/fi, but dark and often depressing. I really enjoyed his Sunflower series. You can download some of the books for free.

One more vote for the Bobiverse. First book is We Are Legion.

    Thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erickson is among the all-time greats of epic fantasy.

Ditto for anything Miriam Toews, but A Complicated Kindness is elite.

    Margaret Atwood of course.

Emma Donoghue is technically Irish but has lived in Canada for a long time is very good. Room is her most famous book, but she also wrote that one that Florence whatsherface was in.

I also liked the Bitten series by Kelley Armstrong but it's pretty trashy.

A few years ago I read and enjoyed Miriam Toews' "A Complicated Kundness."

For sci-fi Comedy, Spider Robinson comes to mind.

Since you asked specifically for books I will list some of my faves, but I highly recommend all works by the authors I'm sharing!

    Post Apocalyptic fiction:

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel Centers on the aftermath of a pandemic, following the survivors through a changed world.

Moon of the Crusted Snow, and Moon of the Turning Leaves by Waubgeshig Rice some of my favorite reads this year, focuses on survivors of a societal collapse, living in a northern Anishinaabe community

    Historical Fiction:

The Paris Express by Emma Donoghue based on real events, creates a story based on people who witnessed a catastrophe

The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield (the astronaut!) set during the space race, follows a group of astronauts in their mission to to moon. Very gritty and technical, but still interesting!

Anne Of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery the coming of age of an orphan on PEI.

    Non Fiction:

Seven Fallen Feathers by Tanya Talaga heartbreaking stories of seven indigenous children who died while living away from their families in Thunder Bay, On. to attend high school.

I really enjoyed Elizabeth May's "Losing Confidence" if you're into nonfiction.

Sci/fi, space fantasy, or space opera: We Are Legion. It's a cheese-tastic book about a guy who gets his brain uploaded into a spaceship and becomes (effectively) a small scale deity with lots of plot armour. It's fun to read, but fairly predictable. In the same vein as Andy Weir.

I had a ton of fun reading All My Friends Are Superheroes. Just go in knowing that it's an odd book. I like odd books. :)

The River Saints https://www.goodreads.com/series/356333-the-river-saints Canadian author, but printed by Amazon. Series is not yet completed, but the author is much younger than GRRM and, barring a very unfortunate accident (knock on wood), I expect he'll actually complete it.

Robert Sawyer writes a lot of sci-fi, light reading but decent. I like him quite a lot.
