Recommend some Canadian books. I just picked up an author that I enjoyed and I'm pleasantly surprised to discover they are Canadian.

Anything by Peter Watts. More sci/fi, but dark and often depressing. I really enjoyed his Sunflower series. You can download some of the books for free.

Highly recommend blindsight and echopraxia(fire fall series). I didn't click with the rifters trilogy.

From my highschool required reading courses, most (all?) of the required Canadian books were dark and depressing, so it fits.
