Like oh god it's bad, I was on the verge of having multiple crashouts throughout the game, only to have the crashout on the final mission, and this game has 30 missions.

And before anyone says anything, I bought it with birthday money so technically I didn't spend money I got from working a job.

i'm not sure if you expecting the plot to be any good was the right way to approach this game

Ever notice how some form of "story doesn't matter in games" gets dragged out to defend games that don't have good stories? It's starting to be a major bugbear I have in game discourse now.

Not saying you're trying to do that, but it kinda does feel like you're doing that.

Ace Combat games (to me) don't have stories that set up gameplay, more that their gameplay requires dumbass stories to justify. It can be done well (see Project Wingman) but at the end of the day, with Ace Combat I'm here to fly funni plane. This obviously doesn't apply to all games, I just enjoy the goofiness of AC combined with extremely tight gameplay.

YMMV, if story matters to you it's not a great game and you should play project wingman instead

Already have, it's a series that I played growing up. Like i've played 4, 5, Zero, 6, AH, AHL (remake of 2), 7, and now 8. On top of that i've played other "ace combats" in Project Wingman, also Airforce Delta Strike.

Though I should get around to actually playing the fan translation of 3, and playing X, X2, and Joint Assault sometime.

It's been weird learning Sunao Katabuchi is one of the main writers for AC4/5-8. Although I got kinda' weird political vibes from In This Corner... in how it seems to expect the viewer to sympathize with the doomed Japanese WW2 war effort.

Animal Crossing, Assassin Creed, Ace Combat, and of course, Air Conditioner.

The 4 ACs of the apocalypse (there might be another games with the same initials).

My first AC was 7 and I crashed out when I realized they actually paid to license the planes from the MIC. I don't know why I was so surprised, CoD and the like do this shit all the time, I guess I just thought the silly plane game would have like the Mockheed Lartin Jeff Forty-Five.

damn that's crazy, I didn't think they'd make an 8th animal crossing by now, but I never thought they would crashout.

Ace Combat in general is pretty "ok" as far as military adjacent games. It's not Metal Gear Solid levels of anti-war, but it's definitely in the same wheelhouse of "war Bad, companies manipulating people into fighting to make more money Bad" type thought.

Well it is a loveletter to AC5, which has an incredibly stupid and convoluted plot, so that checks out. With those expectations I've been enjoying it thus far (on mission 12), granted a lot of the decisions around "military strategy" and magical thinking are pretty incredible, even for Ace Combat standards.

5, while full of holes, tells the story it wants to tell. This plot doesn't even know what story it wants to tell.

I'm definitely too early to say one way or another, so I guess I'll get back to you after I finish the game lol

You're getting into the part where the game meanders about for 10+ missions before throwing you onto a roller coaster in the last 1/5 of the game in a "oh shit, we gotta wrap up all these plot threads" way.

spoilerOf course, Cope is still there throughout the whole game filling in details, and explaining the plot to you...

Last Ace Combat i played was 7 and it felt wrong for some reason and the only other one i played was AC 2 i think on PS1 and i remember having fun with it especially when i got the A10, but 7 didn't feel fun at all.
