Used to play a lot of Ultima, WURM, SWG, A Tale in the Desert, Mortal Online and some smaller sandbox MMOs (anyone remember Roma Victor?)

I've found I have a bit of time on my hands recently and was wondering if there are any modern games that fill the void.

I've had my eye on Stars Reach and I see Albion Online advertised all the time but I was wondering if anyone can give a recommendation?

I have no answer for you, but I'll be watching this thread. Basically grew up on Ultima Online, still deeply tied to some of my most favorite memories. Moved to WoW for a decade after and have similar but slightly different feelings for it, and that true openness of the UO world will forever be special to me.

Both Albion and Eve Online fit your description, but if you tell us about what you are looking for in more detail I can tell you more whether I'd recommend them ;)

Thank you! I'm really hoping to find a world that feels alive. I've bounced off Eve many times in the past. I love space games but it never felt like there was anything worth exploring and the world felt pretty immutable.

Then I fear Albion will not be for you either. It's Eve but on a planet instead.

But then again, both are free to try out so feel free to try them.

In either case I'd recommend getting into a group that can teach you the ropes.

And what do you mean by immutable? Eve is one of the few games I know where you can make a big name for yourself by doing something big (or small and impactful).

I mean I understand that territory changes hands and people can now build structures in eve, but it doesn't feel like a connected world. It feels like a bunch of distinct instances and travel simply being clicking a button, entering a new instance, waiting for a cool down and clicking jump again doesn't help.

I think the fact that there aren't any social spaces for players hurts too. There could be a hundred players docked at the same station as you but you'd never know, and it doesn't affect you.

EVE Online is probably the sandbox.
