Meloni heads Italy’s most rightwing government since the second world war. Italy’s criminal code punishes with a fine ranging from €1,000 to €5,000 anyone who “publicly defames the republic”, which includes the government, parliament, the courts and the army.

Common but disturbing behavior: investigating whether calling out fascism is a problem, but not invesgating whether fascism is a problem.

Punishing people for saying what they see.

Is it defamation when it's true?

Just a few steps from "My secret police will now 'explain' to you just how not fascist I am."

Just a hunch, but it might have something to do with the fact that Meloni is a fascist.

Good on Italy. Everyone, not just school children, should be protected from... name-calling 🤦

Pretty much. Shame in the Italian government for this:

Italy’s criminal code punishes with a fine ranging from €1,000 to €5,000 (£858 to £4,290) anyone who “publicly defames the republic”, which includes the government, parliament, the courts and the army.

Nor the PM nor this fascist government are our Republic. They should respond with personal offense, not institutional.

If your friend who's dressed in leather is a Nazi,

They shouldn't pass the test, and you should probably sever.

Who isn't fascist/racist in the eyes of the left? You can be a moderate libertarian with a couple of populist beliefs and they'll throw those labels at you.

Yeah, you can't even say that Mussolini has been the best politician in Italy in the last 50 years without being called a fascist. And the little detail that her party is the successor of a neo-fascist party created by Mussolini's followers.
