My spouse sent me this rage bait photo. It wasn't even the ego rubbing graphic on the front page that got me (though that's bad enough). It's' the "Moral panic over data centres" that really gets my goat. Ah yes, it's the moral panic that's the issue, right? Right?!

Photo of The Economist magazine. The front cover shows a green monochrome graphic of Jensen Huang with a swirling ball between his hands with money and Nvida chips flying around. The main headline is, "The Sourcer of Silicon: Jensen Huang, Nvidia and the future of AI". Other headlines listed are, "Moral panic over data centres", "China's restaurant diplomacy", "Women, jobs and honour", and "The Bayeux tapestry: quite the yarn"

The Economist has always been a corporate rag, but this is so much worse than 20 years ago.

Ugh, don't give this nerd (derogatory) any more lame delusions of grandeur.

Everyone these corporate rags hold up as a visionary genius later gets disgraced. This will be no exception.

Hyping stock price is the only thing we respect in our nihilistic society.

Side rage: I really doubt what's his face is actually doing any meaningful r&d work. I assume there's a legion of nameless engineers and researchers who are not keeping the profits of their work.

A moral panic is distinct because it's a false threat that actually distracts from real dangers as it maintains the status quo. It's wave of "witch hunting" and "scapegoating."

If anything, the AI doomer bullshit about "AGI will kill (most of) us (not me tho because I'm a good believer)" is the moral panic.

I was recently listening to someone (can't remember who sorry) talking about the doom porn being intentional - AI companies can't admit that their software is buggy crap that doesn't work as advertised and that progress is stagnating (which would tank shares) so instead go on about how AI will kill us all so that they have an easy excuse to 'slow' progress so they can white knight save us from the terrible, horrible, murderous, genocidal, dooms day AI (please don't look behind the curtain).

Is he conjuring all of the world's RAM hardware into a single point in this image? That would explain where it all went.

    Maybe he's eating it

I have an existential panic going on. I'm pretty mellow on my morals.
