Could be an artistic choice in a horror game, but it's also a technical choice since dynamic bounced light is so expensive (and now so literally goddamn expensive).

If your flashlight does that than please tell me what kinda flashlight you got? All mine look like the ones in video games.
It's the way our vision works, not the flashlight (mostly).
High intensity/white light flashlights can induce more of the first image, but even those don't make a hard transition of visible/not visible, as light splashes and our vision has a gentler transition.
I own both cheap flashlights, good ones with high CRI, some with high intensity and high CRI, some with high focus, etc. Pretty much all of them produce the second image in varying degrees because that's how human vision works.
Emisar, and it does a whole heck of a lot more than the picture. By default, it will light up a whole room when I bounce the beam off the ceiling. If I press the button twice, it turns a dark room into daytime. If I press the button twice, then twice again, it turns the room into a supernova and blinds everyone in it. I only use that mode for pointing at the corner of the room (when cats aren’t around) to take photos using refracted light.
There’s also like 70 other things it can do with its one single button, but I mostly just use “on” and “battery check”. It can tell you the room’s temperature! I’ve got two of his lights and they’re like 50 bucks each. One 18650. I have 20 18650s.
What's the battery life like?
On turbo mode: atrocious. But also you can’t see, so it’s whatever.
On normal (extremely bright mode): a couple hours per recharge! Good quality 18650s are basically free (like 5-7 moneys each) so I never find myself having troubles with batteries. I have a D4v2 and a DT8, and the D4v2 lasts much longer but I find myself using the DT8 way more because it’s extremely silly. I swap batteries out every week or two of daily (light) use, and the most I’ve swapped the batteries out in a day is maybe twice? when using turbo mode a lot to take a bunch of indoor photos before I got a phone that takes excellent low light pictures!
Thanks! Those look ridiculous, in a good way.
The d4 is normal, small, and amazing. The DT8 is insane, too bright, and silly but I love it so much. I got a set of warm lights and a set of blinding insane cool white lights, and you can switch between warm and cool on the same flashlight! It’s a crazy light.
i think the night sky is just brighter where i am than most places LOL
Specially since our sensitivity to light and movement detection increases in our peripheral vision because we have more rods there than cones and rods are extremely sensitive to light. We basically trade sharp detail for high light and flicker sensitivity. It's so unnatural when it's just a disc of light and always feels like the devs going "No! you shan't see except where I want you too!" 🤣
"No! you shan't see except where I want you too!"
Well, that's exactly what it is.. it's not as though they're limited to that little cone light source, it's a choice to limit your FOV to create suspense or a sense of claustrophobia or whatever to help tell the story.
I 100% get that and you're absolutely right. My point was that it makes games feel unnatural and breaks immersion for me quite badly, which is a pity, because usually those sorts of games are trying really hard to immerse you in a believable world. It feels like you've suddenly got toilet rolls glued to your face 🤣
(excellent username btw!)
The bottom one is what it looks like when you have a cheap plastic flashlight with an incandescent bulb.
It’s not that it’s inaccurate, it’s just funny that the same flashlight is given to Sam Fisher or the Master Chief.
