Its been 6 years of "its 5 years away". The whole "there are risks of evil AGI" spectacle has been part of it since the beginning, but I can't see this as anything but a veiled attempt to deflate rather than burst the bubble. I don't think it's coincidence that this came out on a Saturday, with time for the stock market to process it until Monday.
Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of artificial token cost-efficiency and medium businesses can stop fooling themselves that its worth it to waste so much power on simple human tasks.
To be honest I am somewhat spooked by the Huggingface hack but I really don't believe that's any bigger than any of the possibilities for these companies using AI for outright cartoon villainy like e.g. an automated mass clearing of their users' bank accounts when push comes to shove
