Many people recognize that gender – how a person identifies, presents themselves and is perceived – has nuances. Some people identify and present as women, others as men, and still others as nonbinary.

But there is a common misconception that biological sex – usually determined by a person’s sex chromosomes, gonads (ovaries or testes) or genitals – is binary. This idea assumes that everyone is biologically either female or male, with no ambiguity or intermediacy.

That's a lot of em-dashes.

The author of this article just released a book on this subject. I wonder if it has as many em-dashes as his article.

    Yup, academic papers and scholarly publications use em dashes. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

    For those not informed this is a thinly veiled accusations towards the authors of this paper accusing them of using generative AI to fake the study. Accusations like these are often made out of ignorance but also often times due to a personal agenda of the accuser.

    what, in general, like taking out your appendix? or just exterior, like removing a breast to treat cancer? or just cosmetic, like fixing a broken nose? or gender-affirming, like a fat guy getting top surgery? or gender-affirming as the medically approved cure specifically for dysphoria?

    where is the line that makes it disturbing?

    where is the line that makes it disturbing?

    "If they look like a female fuck-toy that makes my peeny go brrr but they aren't really a female fuck-toy but a human with man parts, then it makes me uncomfortable and it's their fault. They're lying to me about their fuckability which is how I grade women, but if their fuckability challenges my heterosexuality it's because they're a disgusting abomination and I'm just a normal person."

    Why, in 2026, am I forced to read a -50 vote transphobic comment? Does Lemmy just not have the technology to implement a collapse icon that auto-collapses on stupid shit like this?

    I wouldn't use that feature. Transphobia is against my instance's TOS and many other instance's TOS so if you're silently filtering it out, you're not reporting it and leading to those pieces of shit being banned. Which stops it outright.

    Report stuff like that when you see it. Report it to instance admins like I do. In time people will learn to hold their tongue or just be too banned to say evil shit like that.

    I would be opposed to that feature. I didn't like it on reddit and I certainly wouldn't like it here. We already have a block button if we don't like what someone is saying.
