I didn't like Skyler because she was a normie and I wanted the show to be balls of the walls crazy. Walter = fun times, Skyler = dull times. I did soon realize, without her, there wouldn't be an anchor to tie it all down and no contrast to Walter wouldn't make for such an amazing show. Skyler is a good character, absolutely necessary for it to work.
Then again, people think Walter White is of virtuous character so it may be media literacy.

And she was actually a decent human being. Of course she had her faults, but nothing about her behavior was narcissistic or even all that selfish. Even cheating on Walt came about because he pretty much drove her to do it. It’s an explanation — not an excuse.

On my second rewatch, Skyler is so much easier to sympathize with. She just wants to keep her family together and out of trouble. Walt doesn't communicate and acts out constantly.

She just wants to keep her family together and out of trouble.

By controlling everything everyone does.

Walt doesn't communicate and acts out constantly.

because he knows if he says anything about what he's doing she'll lose her shit, nag him to death, and throw everything out of control just so she feels in control.

guess what? he was right!

I haven't seen the show in years but I think you're being hyperbolic. She seemed very reasonable on my rewatches. Husband turns drug kingpin just to pay for his treatment and provide for his family is an insane idea, and shouldn't ever need to be considered. He also killed people from very early on. Though of course the real solution is universal healthcare, and possibly a wealth tax.

Edit: Oh and he also literally had rich friends. He could've cast his pride aside and "accepted charity".

Husband turns drug kingpin just to pay for his treatment and provide for his family is an insane idea, and shouldn't ever need to be considered.

it was never about this. Walt did it all for himself, for his ego. Walt was cornered into a mundane life by choices he believed he had no choice in making. his cancer diagnosis triggered something inside him that made him realize the illusion of control he thought he had was simply a cage that held his ambition hostage.

Walt was always the "drug kingpin" he just needed to be reminded of that through his own mortality.

as for his pride, Skylar took that from him, though he willingly gave it away she never allowed him to gain it back and discouraged him because she was afraid he would succeed.

it's a perfect example of everyone being shitty and the only true victim was his son.

[-] Monte_Crisco 1 points 13 hours ago

Walt wasn’t always the drug king pin. Sure, he always had the potential. But, more accurately, Walt was always the insecure bastard. He had the inappropriate relationship while he was a professor because it felt good and stroked his ego. He left his own budding company because he couldn’t handle the other 2 falling in love, and he interpreted that as him being shut out — which was clearly not the case. The drug cooking and drug business were additional things he was good at, but the direction of his success was always driven by his insecurity and ego. He practically couldn’t control the urge to become a strong drug kingpin because inside he was a weak, insecure little man.

Skyler was better at being a drug kingpin than Walter. Walter should have stayed in the (meth) kitchen, and let her make the important decisions.

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago

She learned from his missteps.

[-] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

meanwhile, Walter just never learns

[-] edwardbear@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Learning is what Walter did his whole life. He needed to learn, to have contingencies. When you have a death sentence hanging above your head, contingencies stop to matter.

Walter truly only learned. But Heisenberg no longer cared about it. Walter was a genius chemist. You become that by learning every possible second. Walter learned. Heisenberg? He just did.

People hated Skyler more than Todd??? I thought she was annoying and a spoilsport for admonishing my, and the rest of the audience’s, desire to watch a meth empire power fantasy show, but most hated??

[-] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 hours ago

Or what about the stevia lady

[-] AnchoriteMagus@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago

Different kind of hate, I think. I hate Todd, but I still enjoy having him on the show and am curious / interested in his plot lines.

Skyler, conversely, just makes me wish she wasn't in the scene. She's not enjoyable to hate.

[-] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 31 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Skyler's role was integral. It was problematic for some who wanted to see more absurd violence and drug-fueled antics. Walter had a whole-ass family that he abandoned to become a crime lord. Yes, the story an indictment is health care in the u.s. Skyler was a human being whose life was ruined, and her kids' lives were hit

Edit also, fuck Todd, but he was also a compelling character

[-] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I don’t even remember Todd I had to look him up. I really disliked Skylar but I definitely don’t hate her more than say, Gus

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

To be fair, Todd’s child murder was barely half a step crueler than walt’s gaslighting murders.

[-] thorhop@sopuli.xyz 23 points 1 day ago

Yeah? Well there were Cardassians in DS9, but also: Kai Winn.

Wait, what sub is this?

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

And people thought we'd elect a female president 🤣

[-] blarghly@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

I feel like the reason is obvious. The only thing people hate more than Nazis is Karens.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 29 points 1 day ago

She’s not a Karen though. Her behaviour is perfectly reasonable given the situation she’s in.

[-] krashmo@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

Exactly, if you didn't stop at one point during the show and ask yourself "why am I rooting for the drug dealing murderer over this regular woman" then you didn't think about the concepts involved at all. You passively consumed media. That's certainly an option but it's not the intent of the people who made it.

[-] mult@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Her introduction is her giving her husband an unenthusiastic handjob for his birthday. I can see why she was the most hated.

[-] Dojan@pawb.social 3 points 1 day ago

I kind of just assumed that it was a typical depiction of straight people having sex. Nonetheless, an unenthusiastic handjob is a pretty rubbish reason to hate someone.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

we've all had unenthusiastic handjobs, they're the worst.

I've had decent handys from methed out hookers better than what she did.

[-] blarghly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The problem isnt her behavior. It's her personality.

[-] Grumpus_Maximus 3 points 1 day ago

bless you my son. yes

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

I mean guys, the question is using the common usage of the word hate - i hate strawberry ice cream!

If the question was who is the most unethical or evil character they wouldn't have said Skylar except for a handful of incels

[-] gibson@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 day ago
[-] blarghly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Right, but others in the thread are saying this constitutes proof that, like, misogyny or something.

In reality, people hated Skylar because she had the personality of a nagging, entitled, suburban housewife - a Karen - and because she constantly dragged the show into her own sideplot instead of letting it progress down the drug kingpin storyline we were actually interested in.

Like, I don't watch Always Sunny because I think the protagonists are good guys, but if a side character was introduced who constantly got in the way of the gang concocting scams, I would hate them too.

[-] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

But did any of those nazi's have a relationship with another man. After she separated from her drug dealing, murderer, abusive, controlling husband?

Checkmate atheists.

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Rewatched the show recently and literally the only thing she did wrong was be cringe and cheat in retaliation (which was, honestly, the only power move she had in the situation)

Meanwhile Walter's constantly being the worst human filth imaginable and the living embodiment of "Just one more ~~lane~~ crime, bro, and everything will be good i SWEAR Jesse"

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That poor lady is a sexual assault survivor too.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

There are Nazis in every show. They're just typically not on screen at all.

I assume the Nazis in Breaking Bad are on screen for like 15 minutes total.

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

The Breaking Bad nazis are the main antagonists for the final season. That was how low they had to go to have an opponent worse than Walt. And Walt hired them in the first place.
