border agents repeatedly demanded access to his phone and told him they did not need a warrant.

The US is lawless, so the Constitution does not matter, but without a warrant they had no legal claim whatsoever to the phone or its contents.

    That will get you detained.

    I have a long list of actions my university's lawyers tell me will risk detention if I travel to USA. Their top layer of advice is to ignore rights and laws because Border Agents will do that.

    1. Do not cross by car

    2. Do not cross with a burner phone

    3. Do not cross without a phone

    4. Do not cross with a wiped phone

    Prison seems a bit much for the officer, but I think loosing their job and some compensation for the victim is warranted.
