Reminder to everyone that Discord is pushing out ID Verification any day now, and is already selling all the data and discussions on its platform to fascist surveillance company Palantir, most well known for recent AI-Powered Civillian tracking system "Flock Cams", owned and operated by Billionaire Peter Theil who helped reelect Donald Trump.

That's why I moved to Stoat and at some point in the future plan to self-host.

I have a hosted Matrix serving sitting around for this reason. Trying to get folks to use it is another story 😢

I'm hoping that Fluxer will be an easier option for my friends once the mobile apps are a bit more polished. I tried to get them to Matrix, but the experience just wasn't quite smooth enough.

Most of the age verification laws are written fairly openly, probably so the verification companies can come up with all sorts of crazy anti-privacy shit.

However that also means some companies have done the opposite. They can use other methods of verifying age, like common sense. Your 10 year old account alone is enough to reasonably expect you to be over 18 for instance, you probably weren't under 8 when you made that account.

Most aren't going to bother with that though, it's simpler and easier for them to have a third party violate your privacy.

Once had a scammer tryna catfish me in a similar way.

Some time into conversation other person randomly mentions "by the way, I do webcams, you can see here [website]... and yeah, it will ask for credit card data - but it's just to keep kiddies out". 🌝

I would rather jack off with my mind and meet people IRL if this idiocy continues.

At some point there's an endpoint to enshitification, at which people say FU I am going to live in the forest now. I am pretty close.

@Gonzako Shameless plug, I made an extension to try and bypass this on some sites! Free and open source too.

Now when we apply to jobs in the US, we have to agree to a privacy policy that says we agree to phone spam when they share our data to third parties.

I hate everything about this timeline.

I can't wait to read the explosion of breathless media reports and "expert" commentary discussing the sudden spate of compromised ID systems and the subsequent finger pointing between politicians blaming each other for this entirely foreseeable outcome while the professionals who kept raising concerns have their uncredited "I told you so" moment.

I would be less concerned (still not buying it, but...) if pedophiles we already know about were prosecuted. How about putting them in jail before looking for more ways to protect children? What about the rest of Epsteins pedo ring? Are we supposed to think that was just the work of two people?

I'm all for protecting children, but we could do so much more even without sacrificing privacy.

They never cared about children or the victims or anything they cannot use politically.

Here in the EU they are again trying to have client side scanning called chat control. They said it's against pedos, it's absolutely not.

the epstein pedo ring is rich people. they are immune from prosecution, no matter the crime. they are not even really into children, they just fuck them because they can and there is shit you or anyone can do about it.

the only pedos who get prosecuted and are considered criminal, are regular ones without money or connections. because they want to fuck kids out of legit compulsion rather than as a 'fuck you' to society.

I was so enraged when I went to go log into the retirement system website (state employee) and I had to sign up for fucking id.me to log in. Ridiculous bullshit. WHY? Who the fuck is going to log on and look at my retirement statement? Not like I can actually retire any time soon with no health insurance fuckers

I can't wait for the day the whole wide world holds a class action suit to get some of their "ID" money back. "A" sells to "B" sells to "C"...where is my cut?

I just saw this cover image in the Testing Yet Another App for Lemmy community. What a coincidence—I found it pretty funny when I first saw it, and now I’ve run into it again here, lol.
