Could they make some faceted like a diamond and perfectly clear?

Do they have the technology?

Won't give you clear cubes, though

[-] liuther9@lemmy.world 0 points 5 hours ago

Just remove all the gases from water before freezing it

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 hours ago

That's not how it works, sadly

It makes sense if you've ever tried to make ice like that yourself. It's harder than it sounds

Yes, this video demonstrates my point exactly.

36 hours of freezing, only 1/3 of the batch is usable, then sawing and shaping into cube of desirable size. If you have lots of disposable income and hosting a party, chance is you will get this $5 icecube than make it yourself. Seems like the business model make sense to me.

Honestly I see these being super useful stocked at a decent liquor store for when you're hosting company. But at ALDI? Seems like the wrong market. I shop at ALDI, I'd buy these once to have with my scotch for a novelty. But not regularly.

I saw these at my aldis this week too.

I only found it funny since I have not seen fried or any either variation of ice cubes.

For Negronis and other cocktails I'm guessing

For Necrosis and other cock tails!

[-] assembly@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Yeah but it’s like $7USD to just buy the mold to freeze your own. This may or may not come with a reusable mold but my guess is that folk will just use it as disposable which is a metaphor for modern society.

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 7 hours ago

If you use these in cocktails, a very big part of the presentation is that the cubes are perfectly clear, giving a very interesting look to the drink

Making clear ice at home is quite tedious, and not just a simple "put water in a mold and done" job

[-] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

You gotta use a vacuum pump? How do you do it

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 4 hours ago

You basically need to freeze the water in a partially insulated container and never let it fully freeze into a solid block

There are a bunch of videos that show you how to do it

[-] False@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

The molds are pretty notorious for sucking

At that point, why not just buy a permanent reusable solution like whiskey stones?

Sure, maybe you like your drink watered down, but then JUST USE YOUR ICE MAKER or water down your drink.

[-] False@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Whiskey stones didn't chill things as much as ice does. Something about the physics of having the cold melted water mix with the drink, or something idk I'm not a physicist.

[-] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 hours ago

I think people are buying these for the subjective aesthetics

[-] zwerg@feddit.org 1 points 13 hours ago

Slow melting? Its going to melt at the same rate as any other ice cube... unless its not just water... yeah, I'll give that a hard pass

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 7 hours ago

It does melt slower compared to classic cubes

The surface area to volume ratio is a lot smaller, which causes it to melt slower

Source: I use big ice balls in the summer, and they take a lot longer to melt compared to the same volume of normal ice cubes

[-] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 hours ago

So you've got big balls

[-] backroom9290@fedinsfw.app 5 points 11 hours ago

Clear ice actually does melt more slowly: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/J7t97Qp89aE

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 0 points 10 hours ago

Frozen ice cubes? Are there other types of ice cubes?

[-] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

They're perfectly clear. You can't see them in water. That's the angle.

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 6 hours ago

I would've thought the angle was 90°. Shows what I know I guess.
