Well he's right. 0 x2 = 0 ...

Seems i was very late to joke. I'll see myself out.

[-] BranBucket@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

He can promise that it won't help because the people he's paid to put in power will refuse to act on it.

Shit, we could make life better for a lot of people if we just distributed the federal revenue we have now differently, but that requires not bowing down to the agendas of billionaire donors.

[-] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

He's saying that because he understands the government is corrupt and those tax dollars would end up in the pockets of Trump and his sycophants, and funneled into the military-industrial complex in support of this months' endless war du joure, right? Right?

[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

So then he apparently doesn't even know what taxes even are, or why they're collected.

[-] DJKJuicy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 hours ago

Yeah, Bezos pays almost nothing in income tax compared to his wealth.

Double of almost nothing is still almost nothing. So I guess he's technically right, which is usually the best type of right...but.

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

They always say crap like, "Believe me!"

Don't.

Bernie Sanders' current proposal to tax America's nearly 1000 billionaires 5% of net worth per year would bring in $4.4 Trillion (with a T) per year.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 6 hours ago

Hmmm.. ok, but what if we kill you and give that teacher in Queens 5 million of your dollars?

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 hours ago

Your promises ain't worth shit.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 6 hours ago

That's because you're paying way less than half of what you should. Shall we start with 10% of everything over a billion of your net worth per year?

[-] elbiter@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Let's not believe the promise and make it anyway. Not double, a thousand times. For a start.

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

No one's talking about just double. Orders of magnitude.

[-] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 4 points 13 hours ago

"Trust me, bro."

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago

I promise you that when we eat him Bezos will be delicious.

doubles his taxes

Bezos continues to pay $0 in taxes

Was going to say this, he's technically right because he pays so little in taxes to begin with. I am honestly more of a believer in a flat tax for the rich now than progressive tax structure. But they'd find some way to weasel out of it so there's only one solution to them.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

You could take 90% of his wealth and he’d still have more than 99.999% of the rest of the country.

He didn’t earn that money. He’s just a squatter making money on everyone else’s work. Stfu you whiner, Bezos.

[-] Smaile@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Interesting stratagy of trying to get lower taxes for the angry little people to distract from you own under contributions bazos. I don't think it's worked but it was worth a shot I guess.

[-] gumball4933@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Bezos is right. 2 x 0 = 0

[-] Zink@programming.dev 16 points 1 day ago

The guy with all the money says that other people getting some of the money wouldn't help them.

And in the US a huge number of people just nod along because our culture tells us that net worth = human worth = intelligence = trustworthiness.

There's no continuing the thought, like if the money won't help struggling teachers then why is it so important that it stay with the person who already has ten thousand times the amount of money that would make a teacher rich and set for life?

[-] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Have you heard the song 'If I were a rich man' from Fiddler on the roof? One of the lyrics was that if he was a rich man people would flock to him ask him questions that 'would cross a Rabbi's eyes' meaning they would be complicated. And he says that it would not matter if he was wrong or right since being rich alone is what gives you credibility.

[-] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 125 points 2 days ago

Bezos is right. Double of nothing is... nothing.

[-] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure that he said that with that very thought in mind. Like a thinly veiled fuck you to the non-Epstein class.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 15 hours ago

how can we forget, zuckerberg, thiel , BEZOS and several other billionaires were having DINNER at one of epstein estate one time.

[-] fartographer@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

But not Musk because he's too thirsty and weird for the pack of societal-eroding pedos

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 86 points 1 day ago

Technically true.

2 x $0 = $0

[-] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

"I promise you, it wouldn't work. Actually, it'd make everything worse. So just trust me and don't try it. It's for your own good. I know what I'm talking about. You know I'd never lie, right? So no matter what happens, don't try it. Okay?"

[-] disorderly@lemmy.world 60 points 1 day ago

Sounds like we should nationalize Amazon. That's what he's saying, right?

You could kill Epstein and it's not gonna make a difference I promise

[-] P1k1e@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I have a great idea, we'll take all his billions, and set them on fire. No tax! And all of a sudden, inflation goes the other way for a day

Edit: spelling

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

this is one of my things. you get these arguments about how well the government may spend the money but even if great wealth was taxed and burnt like you say it would have massive good effects on the economy. Its wealth disparity that is the problem.

[-] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 day ago

I'd be open to try it though, for science..

[-] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

"I promise you" is billionaire speak for "fuck you and fuck your family"

Time to post a classic: https://hmijail.github.io/1-pixel-wealth/

It's a few years old, so probably need to double these numbers. At least, Wikipedia says that Bezos' net worth is now $284 billion.

Let's try it and see, you may have conflicting goals

[-] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Education is paid for by property taxes. So increasing income tax revenue will not help teacher salaries unless the funding mechanism is changed.

Specifically, new taxes on businesses and billionaires need to be specifically earmarked for education, otherwise that money just goes to the pentagons bloated budget. Basically from one pocket to the other. Billionaires don’t want to pay for massive wars, they want to profit from arms sales and the military industrial complex.
