I just subscribed after seeing this.

Nice clean video with no BS and great to see something dedicated to Mac Gaming!

Max Tech: OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE APPLE DID THIS WOW

Andrew Tsai is extremely good non-BS non-horrible videos for the niche of people who are into Mac games and emulation on Mac.

Interesting video but honestly game selection is so bad on Mac and compromises for how to play not native times leaves with the same feeling of buying store brands at the grocery store. The quality might be there but there experience is always lacking.

Honestly, my impression was that almost nothing ran on Macs, and I gotta say I only recently checked which steam games I owned ran on my Mac and surprisingly the majority do. I haven’t tried them all, but the ones I did ran well. I’m sure this is dependent on what you are playing, but I’ve put a ton of time into Civ6 since realizing this last week and it works great. Not saying gaming on Macs is amazing but I think it’s probably better than most people think.

I’ve had an M1 Max for over a year.. it can run pretty much that’s anything available on the best graphics and does it without much hassle

It still seems like each year, Apple is slowly moving more and more into gaming so this seems like a good next step.

Gaming on Apple will only ever be a joke if they continue to refuse to support vulkan

Excited to watch this, was considering this along with a refurb 14" or even 16" but wouldn't mind the battery life if this is capable without getting too hot. The 1 fan and size still worries me, especially if I started adding things like streaming or what not. (tho streaming is still a pain on Apple anyways)

Edit: Oh wow, ok after watching the M3 not so great to play games on outside of maybe LoL/Wow and still on lower settings. May have to refurb an M1 Pro after all.

I find this a weird place to start gaming. For someone who has so much money to spend on a non-upgradable 8GBRAM device there’s way better options. Even a Steam Deck (especially the OLED version) would be better tbh, but with so much money wasted on a laughable 8GBRAM mac, one can build a hell of a gaming PC…

Some people care about gaming and doing work / homework. Steam Deck is not a great option for them.

If money’s no object, obviously a steam deck for portable gaming, an M3 Max for productivity / engineering, and a gaming PC with 4090 is the way to go.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I'd argue that the steamdeck as a second device is the perfect option for those wanting to game and do work.

You don't need to buy a new M3 mac in order to play games... especially when there are no (conventional style) games on that platform!

Just spend a little less on feeding the apple beast and get a device designed for the purpose.

Gaming is a tertiary activity on my computer. I’m interested in gaming on my Mac if it’s easy and readily available, don’t care if it isn’t. So if Apple makes it easier for me to game I’ll do it.

If gaming was my top priority on my computer I just wouldn’t own a Mac. So I agree if you’re a big gamer and that’s the main use for your computer, you’re better off building a gaming PC. But for people like me it isn’t weird at all and I hope Apple continues pushing M chips for gaming.

I will never understand why anyone would wanna do gaming on a Mac.

Speaking for myself, I love Windows and I ain't planning on moving off of Android, but the M1/M2/M3 Macbooks are setting a higher sexier bar, with a battery life nowhere to be found in the Windows ecosystem and also very light, which is always nice.

I'm getting a new laptop next year and I'm open to learning MacOS, but I also want to be able to play Rocket League with most settings on High and no bugs. I always keep an eye on /r/macgaming for that. If that's not possible then I'm getting a Zephyrus and wait for another 3-5 years to check again

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I'm the same. I love the mac hardware but prefer windows os. My plan is to get a macbook and just use Boot Camp to run windows OS

I'm also very tempted by the ARM based Macbooks but

  1. MacOS is still neglected platform for gaming
  2. Windows actually gives me a curated Ubuntu to run under Windows Subsystem for Linux and WSL integrates beautifully with Windows. Brew is nice an all but it is amateur time compared to a proper linux distro
[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Can you please expand on why macOS is amateur time compared to WSL?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Why not?

The only reason why gaming isn't a thing on macOS is because Apple has historically not made it easy for developers to support macOS.

Other than that, it makes sense that users would want to use their Apple compute on games instead of booting into windows for a gaming session.

Buy an M2 Air and a Steam Deck instead imo
