It's always confused me when people make a huge distinction between friendship and romance. By my thinking, a romantic relationship is a type of friendship. Like squares and rectangles.

The idea that you could be in a committed relationship with someone who's not your friend seems bizarre and hostile somehow.

My partner and I are consistently surprised when we realize that a friend, coworker, family member etc. actively dislikes their partner and/or doesn't consider them a friend.

Bizzare and hostile is a fitting description, I couldn't hack it in a relationship where I didn't feel deep and genuine friendship for the other person. I feel like it's foundational to establishing the type of trust that feels indispensable to me in a committed partnership.

And True Romance starts when your boss hires an escort to sleep with you on your birthday, and the two of you end up falling in love and getting married at city hall the next day

i don't really understand how a romance is different from a friendship other than physical attraction playing a role too.

Or, good romance also develops a good friendship.

Whichever comes first, the two are not mutually exclusive but a must for a long and happy relationship.
