I don't get the fitted sheets hate meme. You stretch it over a corner and move around. I used to get fucked up by my dad for fucking up non-fitted sheets on my bed.

The quality of the fitted sheet and the bulk of the mattress make a difference. No, don't tell me they are standardized to precision because they aren't. I've made beds at strangers houses many times and it's as different as it gets. Those few millimetres difference mean you can or cannot pull the sheet correctly over the last corner. Some beds take me 5 minutes to make, on the other hand difficult beds can take me over half an hour to make (all linen and covers etc).

The hardness of the mattress also plays a role here, softer mattresses are easier. Smaller mattresses are easier to lift and manipulate, too. Cheap linen and/or cotton linen regularly washed with hot water shrinks, making the fit more difficult. Also the closer to a square your mattress gets in length x width the easier it gets to accidentally pick the wrong corner on the fitted sheet. Finally, physical strength makes a difference, the stronger you are the easier it is to pull the fitted sheet if it's tight.

So basically you could say if you are an average man of average man strength fitting an average-to-good quality fitted sheet on a single mattress, you will never experience any issues with this task.

Now if you are an average woman of average woman's strength fitting a low-quality fitted sheet on a king sized mattress you will struggle. You will break a sweat. Guaranteed.

I guess it's a new women stereotype to add to the list

  • Women want clothes with pockets.
  • Women hate fitted sheets.
  • Women eat sushi

[-] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

True, but also Skullgrid has a point.

I posted this late at night, vocabulary bad

[-] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 month ago

Agreed.

They just work.

I guess the people that have issues are doing circus level gymnastics on their bed.

I just wish they'd make them a bit tighter. I fucking hate how they bunch up in the middle. It doesn't seem so fitted hangin off all loose like a used condom on a flacid dick.

Get some.. uhh, I'm not sure what they're called, but they're elastic bands with little cloth clamps on the ends, like suspenders. A pack should have three shorter ones and a long one. You clamp them along the underside of your mattress to the fitted sheets and they keep the sheets from bunching.

A little bit of a pain to deal with when it's time to change the sheets, but so worth it to not sleep on wrinkles.

I lift the mattress corners every week and re-smooth them.

[-] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

Every week? How long as you using the same sheets for?

[-] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 month ago

Humm, no comment?

[-] Damarus@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

From my observation this happens especially when the mattress is too soft, so you're stretching the fitted sheet when lying on it.

Fitted sheets aren't hard. Be an adult.

[-] Bougie_Birdie@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah, like being an adult is easy

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 5 points 1 month ago

They don't fold nicely either.

Flat sheets all the way. Especially since I've got an odd sized IKEA bed. Don't think they even sell that size any more in the UK so the mattress is like 20 years old.

[-] Soup@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Opposite corners first, then the rest is easy. I do wish the standard would be for deeper mattresses, though.

[-] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

I only had this problem after upgrading my bed to a pillowtop and using sheets that fit my old standard mattress. It was entirely solved by buying the correct sheets for my mattress.

Deep pocket fitted sheets for thick mattress. Done and done.

I’ve got ones that fit over the boxspring as well, and have straps that go around the corners. Very easy and fit well.
