The song is absolutely fantastic, but the shredding is my least favorite part! Shredding to me always feels super masturbatory.

Shredding for me is to music what photorealism is to art. Looks cool at first, you’re amazed and then you slowly realise how oversaturated the style is and it stops seeming nearly as impressive.

Yes. What’s more impressive to me is people who can shred but don’t. I listened to Pinegrove for years before I learned that Evan could shred and is a sex pest :(

Most guitarists who shred do it purely for the sake of it, like those male metal singers who scream D6s just to say they can. I heard all the stories about Eddie Van Halen being the greatest guitarist of all time and walked away from their music feeling extremely underwhelmed by the guitar parts.

I hadn’t heard that about Pinegrove. Shit sucks.

Whoa, now! Don’t you be comin’ for Van Halen

Really, though, I think there’s a time and a place for shredding. Like the outro to “Side With the Seeds” by Wilco is near perfection and some of the tastier shredding I can think of off the top of my head… helps when Nels Cline is the one shredding though lmao

shredding on an acoustic is wild. the string action on those things is typically really high because its meant to be strummed, and the necks tend to be rounder and thick.

shredder guitars typically have flat fretboards, flat skinny straight necks, and super low action almost touching the frets. that makes it easier to do various techniques called shredding. On an acoustic you have to fight it the entire time.

It's funny actually because what I get from this song is "1930s moonshining/bootlegging montage"
